Halfway through the strange exchange, Edward stepped in front of Mia protectively. Peter set his large hands on his hips and sighed.
Brandy scoffed. “Really, not going to sniff me too?”
Peter shook his head. “I was already near you, and nothing.”
“What is he doing?” Mia whispered.
Peter straightened at her words, and his gold eyes found hers. Mia stepped back the moment he took his first long stride.
“Whoa, what the fuck?” Edward said, throwing up a hand to keep himself between her and the alpha.
Peter sighed. “Just let me get a whiff.”
“It’s okay, Edward,” Claudia said.
“A whiff?” Edward asked, his tone incredulous.
“Yes, a whiff.” Peter pushed Edward aside and stepped directly in front of Mia. He studied her face and breathed in deeply. “That’s better. I thought I was losing my mind.”
“What are you talking about?” Mia’s words were forced and cracked halfway through.
“What are you doing?” Edward snapped.
Her magic burst, and she prepared to defend her mate at the startled tone in his words. Everyone turned to see Serena folding Edward’s left ear forward.
“Holy shit… again?” Serena whispered and hurried to where Mia and Peter still stood. Serena grabbed Mia’s hand and pulled it closer to get a better look.
“Is she?” Brandy called.
“What the hell is going on?” Mia asked, her heart pounding under her breastbone.
“You always have this birthmark?” Serena asked with a face-splitting grin.
Peter sighed. “Both of us know the answer is no.”
“What birthmark?” Mia asked, pulling back her hand to investigate. Edward’s fingers ran along the small of her back, and a warm calm filled her. “Whatisthat?”
“You’re pregnant,” Brandy announced.
Rounds of “She is?” went around before cheers and congratulations burst from the group. Mia merely stood there, staring at Serena and Peter. Edward went stock-still, and she shook her head side to side.
“No, I’m not. I can’t be.” The words flew from her mouth even as her brain flashed through each of their encounters and the fact neither of them had used any sort of birth control.
Edward’s hands moved around her and cradled her flat stomach. “She’s pregnant?” he asked.
“Yeah, dude,” Peter said. “I can smell it, and Serena found the mark behind your ear and on her hand. It’s a done deal. Congrats. Now, can a werewolf get some food around here?”
“We’ll give you two a minute. Congratulations!” Serena told them and pulled Peter toward the house where the food had been taken after they ate.
Edward turned Mia in his arms. They shared a silent moment together, each processing the news of a child they had created, a child who until a couple of weeks ago neither even considered.
When the shock began to wear off, Mia grinned at him. “A baby?”
Edward’s smile drove away the rest of her uncertainty. “A baby.”
She wrapped her arms around his waist and pressed her cheek to his chest. The strong thrumming of his heart beat a soothing rhythm against her face. She breathed in his scent and sighed.
“What if he’s wrong?”she blurted, her stomach dropping at the possibility.
