Closing her eyes, she raised her palms out toward the corner and felt magic move within her. When it settled, she let her lids open and noted the space she created. “That’s a new one for me.”

Brandy stepped forward to stand in a similar fashion, and Mia watched the grass in the corner bubble with water. As the seconds passed, more water released from the ground. Stones appeared, and in a matter of minutes, a waterfall fountain flowed into a pool at the base. The soothing sound reached her ears as Brandy lowered her hands.

“The water is coming straight from the ground. If we get any droughts, I expect you’ll find it dry as well.”

“Damn, you two are something,” Junior stated as he knelt before the water.

“I think Mia should take my spot as earth because wow,” Terra stated.

Mia walked to the witch and grabbed one of her hands. “Oh, no… I appreciate being invited into the coven, but I have no intention of taking your spot.”

Terra’s free hand waved at the garden. “Are you sure? Because you—”

Mia grabbed her by the shoulders. “Terra!” When the witch looked her in the eyes, she continued. “I’m not taking your spot, honey.”

Terra bit her lip, and her shoulders slumped. “Okay…”

“Are you guys sure she’s not related to you all? Because she’s pretty badass,” Hugh said.

Mia released Terra and turned as Ethan spoke. “Not by blood she’s not.”

She heard his words, but there seemed to be some underlying meaning to them. Her brows pinched together as she waited for him to say more or for the wisdom to catch on. Unfortunately, neither happened, and Hugh didn’t ask for more on the matter either.

Feeling eyes on her, she shifted again and found Edward watching her closely. He didn’t look away at being caught staring, but rather, he narrowed them on her. For a moment, she felt like a specimen under a microscope.

Had none of them witnessed magic like hers before? There weren’t many who could conjure elements without some help, but surely a family of witches should have seen it at least once. Brandy alone could work with water, so Mia expected a few others could with other elements.

With her attention still on Edward, she asked, “What are y’all’s powers? I mean, after seeing Brandy work water, you guys must have seen others with an elemental power.”

A silence fell upon the group, the couples studying each other and their eyes darting toward the coven members. Mia felt magic in the air, but nothing visible happened as the coven members and herself studied the family.

Brandy walked closer and linked an arm with hers.

“Bran,” Ryan warned.

She waved off her husband. “How about you, Edward, and I have a chat about it later this week, and he can check out your shop. I think he’ll have some great ideas on how you can bring in more business.”

Mia opened her mouth to argue but found her lips flapping in the wind.

“What do you think, Edward?” Brandy asked.

His jaw clenched, the muscle ticking as his nostrils flared. “Sure, I’d planned on checking in on the café anyhow, so I’ll go to her shop after I’m done.”

Chapter 5

“So, what did you think about Mia?” Brandy asked.

They had been together roughly thirty seconds, and she was already laying into him. It was the reason he’d told her he would drive them over. The walk would not have taken long, and the sun was still low in the sky. It gave them a reprieve from the summer heat, but he’d hoped the car ride would have been too short. He was wrong.

Edward glanced away from the road and at his baby sister. He supposed it was good to see that marriage and a baby had not changed her after all.

He turned onto the next street and shrugged. “She seems nice enough.”

“Nice enough?” Brandy chuckled. “She’s smoking hot, sweet, funny, and calling her down-to-earth is sort of an understatement after seeing what she can do. I guess that’s how you guys feel about me controlling all the elements.” She muttered the latter as she stared out the window.

He was glad to hear he wasn’t the only one to be affected by the woman. “Does Ryan know you’ve got a crush on her?”

Brandy laughed. “If I was into chicks, he’d have to be worried. That’s for sure. Honestly though, Ryan thinks Mia’s pretty great too.”
