This left the cabin. It was the only thing in their near future he could control.

He rolled out of bed, careful not to wake her, and relieved himself. After grabbing his phone, he hurried to the kitchen and started the coffee pot and tea kettle.

Edward: Can you please open for Mia today?

With a search of the cabinets, he found a second travel mug and set it on the counter as his phone vibrated.

Claudia: Sure. Is everything okay? Is she not well?

“What are you doing?” Mia asked, her voice heavy with sleep.

The woman was gorgeous. His T-shirt hit just above her knees, and a mess of curls framed her face. He wanted to scoop her up and take her back to bed, but he could not—not yet.

Edward set down his phone and smiled. “Get ready. I need to show you something.”

“Huh?” she muttered, her eyes blinking away the sleep. “Is that coffee?”

Edward laughed. “Yes, coffee for me and tea for you, but you don’t get any until you’re dressed and sitting in my car.”

Her face scrunched up. “You’re awfully bossy today. Her gaze drifted to his phone. Did Peter call? Are they going in today? Shit, I need to see if I can—”

Edward stepped forward and cupped her face in both hands. He pressed his lips to hers. “Breathe. No, Peter hasn’t called, but I really need you to go change so we can go.”

“Go where?”

He lifted his eyes to the ceiling and sighed. “Mia. Do you trust me?”

Joy filled him when she turned on her heels and booked it toward his room, calling over her shoulder, “Yes!”

Within fifteen minutes, they were dressed, had travel mugs in hand, and were stepping up to his car in the garage.

“Now will you tell me?” she asked as she lifted her legs into the car.

Edward stared at her smooth, olive-skinned legs, long and toned and made to wrap around his waist. “Patience, baby.”

He adjusted himself before getting in and pointing his car out of town. His nerves ramped up with each passing mile. Taking her hand in his, he linked their fingers and kissed their adjoined hands. The simplicity of the kiss shouldn’t have calmed him, but it did. Everything about Mia both soothed and rattled him.

She sang along with the radio as he hoped his realtor had done everything he’d asked. He questioned every decision he had made and wondered whether Mia would like it. The house was nearly flawless but needed a few touches before he deemed it perfect to reveal.

“I don’t think I’ve ever driven down this road. These trees are so beautiful,” Mia announced as she studied the scenery.

“You’ve never been out this way before? Not even with all your time in the woods?” he asked, surprised to hear her words.

Mia shook her head. “My family had this one spot, and I guess I stuck to it. I always go out of town on the fifteen. You’re still not telling me where we’re going?”

“Almost there,” he replied with a grin and a squeeze of her hands.

Mia lowered her window and stuck her face into the wind. Her curls were pulled on top of her head, and a few sprung free. She didn’t speak again until he turned onto the long windy drive. She released his hand and sat forward as she gasped. “Wow! This place is gorgeous! Who are we visiting?”

“You like it?” he asked, his stomach rolling with nerves.

“I’ve never seen anything like it!”

Edward pulled in front of the three-car garage and shut off the engine. “Let’s look around.”

“You sure? I really don’t feel like being shot at again.” Mia looked around as she chewed on her lower lip. “I’m not sure there’s a neighbor for at least a mile, so I’m sure the animals would get to us before anyone found our bodies.”

“Damn, woman. Your thoughts went dark, really fast.”
