“All righty then, you were saying before Sassy the Shitastic interrupted?” Zelda asked, waving her hand around in a get-on-with-it motion.

Grayson recapped all the things that had gone sideways since his return, as well as his run-in with Kenny. The longer he spoke, the more tired he seemed and the angrier I got. My cells began heating and before I could stop it, I stumbled against the glass case of goodies at Bougie Treats.

“Lee? What happened? I thought you were going to Grayson’s,” Cami asked as she shut a box of treats.

“Oops,” I muttered as I clasped my head with one hand and steadied myself with the other.

“Here, this one’s on the house,” Cami said, shoving a box into Angelica’s hands.

My coworker pursed her lips in distaste and didn’t bother with manners. The bell over the door announced her departure.

I sucked in a breath and rolled my eyes as I willed calmness to return. “I got mad and ended up here. Can I—”

Cami laughed as she pulled a croissant from the case. “You owe me.”

“It’s going to take a few lifetimes to settle my debt,” I said and smacked a kiss on her cheek. “I need to get back.”

“Good luck!” she said and leaned against the counter, amusement tipping her lips.

“Brat,” I muttered around a bite and imagined the beautiful garden behind Grayson’s home. I appeared by the tree line.

“Well, that’s easy. I’ll just crawl into his mind and see if he’s telling the truth,” Sassy said with a wave of her hand.

“That’s not a bad idea,” Zelda said at the same time Grayson spotted me.

“Baby, you okay?”

I raised my last bite in the air and popped it into my mouth. “What did I miss?”

“I’m going to see if your ex is—”

“Yeah, not my ex,” I said, interrupting Sassy.

“Okay.I’m going to see if Kenny’s lying about this,” Sassy said.

Zelda nodded. “And I’m checking with Baba Yopaininmybutt to see if she figured out who created the storm, since we determined it wasn’t a teen screwing around.”

“I’m going to figure out all the people your father hurt with his actions. Everything seems to point at some misconception that you’re guilty of the same crimes as Bryson,” Mac said, his broad shoulders heaving with frustration. He directed his alpha-level attention to Grayson. “If anything else happens, and I meananything, I expect to hear it fromyou.”

“Yes, My King.”

Chapter 13

Kaleb held the last nail over the plywood and pulled back the hammer as Grayson’s phone rang.

“Fuck me sideways, what now?” He growled as he pulled the phone out and made his way down the last few rungs of the ladder. The moment his head bent over the screen, his body tensed so tight, I worried he’d snap into two.

“What?” I asked, feeling the familiar warming. I sucked in a breath and willed the sensation to go away.

“It’s the alarm to the shop. We gotta go!” Grayson threaded his fingers in mine and tugged. “You’re not staying here without any of us.”

I scoffed as I ran alongside him. “It’s cute that you thought I wouldn’t be going with you.”

Bear and Kaleb jumped into the second row of the truck’s cabin, and I’d barely shut the passenger door when Grayson started turning around in his driveway, gravel flying left and right at the force.

Pressing one hand to the cab’s ceiling and holding onto the door with the other, I snapped, “Can younotkill us in the process?”

“Tell Mac to meet us there,” Grayson said by way of answering, his knuckles going white around the steering wheel.
