It hadn’t escaped her notice thatsince she’d arrived at the farm, Cam had left exactly once, returning within the hour with full bags of groceries to stock themini-fridge in her cottage.Other than that, she spent her timeworking or in her little home.

When she spotted Delaney, Cam flashedher a relieved look and immediately disappeared into the food preparea in the back of the café.

“New employee’s skittish.”Sawyer eyed Delaney as he blew over the top of the steamingcoffee.

“Apparently.”

“Why do you think thatis?”

She rolled her eyes and pointed to thedoor.“Outside.”

Both men followed her as she led theway onto the deck. She wasn’t having this conversation where Camcould overhear.Turning to face Sawyer, she planted her hands onher hips.“While you’re an awesome guy, and a good cop, noteveryone has had positive experiences with law enforcement.Youknow that.”

“She say anything toyou?”

“Nope.”

“She must’ve filled out anemployee application,” Walker put in.“What’d you learn about herfrom that?”

Delaney shook her head.“I’m notpassing on information from an employee application. That’s abreach of Cam’s privacy.”

“We want you safe,Laney.”

She glared at Walker.“Idon’t need two big strong men to keep me safe.I’ve been takingcare of myself, and the farm, just fine without your help.Besides,I’mnotthe one who’s been shot at, so I don’t think it’s me who’s indanger.”She wagged a finger at them.“Leave Cam alone. Both ofyou.”

Sawyer sipped coffee.“There’ssomething off about her, but I’ve got other things to deal with atthe moment.”He turned to Walker.“You’ll keep an eyeout?”

At Walker’s brief nod, Delaney let outan exasperated sigh.Sawyer lifted his cup in salute.“I put acouple dollars in the tip jar. Thanks for the coffee.”He joggeddown the stairs, and a minute later the cruiser was gone in a cloudof dust.

Delaney turned to Walker. She wishedhis dark and broody expression, on top of being hot and protective, didn’t make her want to lick him all over.He was looking rightback at her and heat kindled low in her belly. He stepped towardher, and she took a step back. She had a feeling he knew what hedid to her because she did the same to him.

He closed the gap and she bumped upagainst a post, causing a shower of deep pink petals to fall fromthe bougainvillea overhead. His hand went to her hair, fingerssliding through as he pulled pink petals from hertangles.

“Did you leave geraniumson the porch for Clara?”she blurted out.

He paused, his gaze caught on hers, then shifted to watching his fingers as they stroked down her neck. She hoped he couldn’t feel her pulse hammering like a rabidwoodpecker.

“I was at Sisters Hardwareand they were there.I thought you’d like them.”

“They’re forme?”

“Yeah, they’re foryou.”

“You’re confusingme.”

“Okay, let’s straightenthis out then.”

“This?”

“Yeah, this thing that’sbetween us, because what we had is still there. It never wentaway.”

“You wentaway.”

He dropped his hand.“Yeah, I did.ButI never stopped thinking about you.”

“Walker, I—”

The sound of an approaching vehiclemade them look up.A pickup that might’ve been new in the lastcentury parked, and two teenagers stepped out.Delaney glanced ather watch and huffed a frustrated sigh.“That’s the Maldonadotwins.I’m interviewing them this afternoon and hoping to hire themfor the summer season.”
