Brothers? My brothers?
Was that Maddie?
Why was she coming back?
Muro drifted back into the house, but by the time he ended the phone call, he was in front of me again.
“Another way to prove that I can’t die, Adler,” Muro said. “You destroyed my building. Dissolved my business. Even tried to seduce my stepdaughter,” he smirked. “But it took youthreetimes to actually blow up the building. Then you tried to kill me with three guns!” He chuckled to himself. “But I’m invincible, Adler. Face it.”
But Muro was still human; that mistake was going to cost him. But I had to figure outhow. My guns were on the ground, a few feet away.
“Before we get settled,” he smiled, putting a hand on my shoulder, “I ought to check and make sure you’re not hiding anything.”
He checked my body, patting me down. Eventually, he found my knife. He held it up to my neck.
“I can’t believe you actually fell for my cunt of a stepdaughter,” he said, gazing at the knife as if it brought back memories of her. “Then again, I should have guessed it; your father fell for my wife.” He stepped on one of the guns, using it to give him an extra inch of height, but he still had to look me in the eyes. “You use that knife on her, Derek? Hold it up to her neck when you fuck her?” I grit my teeth. “I bet she gets wet like that. She always did for me.”
My headache pounded, the pressure swelling in my skull. I was going to have to break my wrists getting out of these cuffs.
But one way or another, Muro was going to die.
Muro’s sneer bore into me. But my expression stayed stoic; I had to survive until I was out of these cuffs, and that meant not falling into his traps.
“And her pussy of a son,” he said. “He’s got my blood in him, and he’s pathetic.”
Anger boiled inside of me. “He’s your son,” I growled. “Show some respect.”
“Ah. So you speak up for the son, but not for the cunt?”
It had nothing to do with that, but I let him think that he was pissing me off. I needed him to think he could manipulate me.
“Don’t worry,” Muro snickered. “I’ll kill him too. Once the time is right.”
“That wasn’t the deal,” I muttered.
“You and Maddie really are stupid, aren’t you?” he laughed. “You won’t be around to witness it.”
He let the knife cross my neck in a shallow cut. The pain was searing, but I held still. Unimpressed, Muro tossed the knife to the floor. My eyes followed it.
“Don’t even think about it,” he said. I stayed still. “Now, we can negotiate. If you tell me where you sent my money, I can make your death quick. That’s the deal: quick or slow? Do you want a quick, merciful death, or a slow and painful one?
All I needed was the chance to get out of these restraints or to find a moment where Muro’s guard was down. So I told him the truth.
“The money is gone,” I said.
Muro’s face went slack. “You’re lying.”
I smiled for the first time since seeing him that night. “It’s gone. All of it. I couldn’t tell you where it was if I wanted to.”
Muro howled, “Lies!”
The door shoved open, blue moonlight flooding into the living room. Maddie stepped inside, her face still swollen, her gait wobbly. But she was different, a new air of confidence about her.
My heart leaped into my throat, then my body flooded with heat. What was she doing here?
“Get out!” I yelled. Maddie glared at me. I almost didn’t recognize her. It was as if she truly was my enemy’s daughter.
She couldn’t have been planning this all along.
