With a laugh, “Gage, yes!” spilled from my mouth.
As he slipped the ring on my finger, the girls in the crowd had mixed emotions, some wild with glee, some belting out boos.
When the ring was on, and he stood, pulling me close, he laughed as I kissed his lips. He took the kiss deeply, making me almost forget we had an audience of not just fans, but practically the whole town. “Kelly Strickland. It has quite a ring to it, don’t you think?”
“I spent most of my teenage years tracing out that name. It sounds right to me.”
“I hope you like the ring.”
“I love it.” I stared down at the beautiful ring. “I hope you…”
“You hope what?”
“I hope you don’t mind that we have a little jumpstart on becoming a family.” Slowly, I raised my eyes to his, trying to gauge his initial reaction. Would it be disappointment? Happiness?
I saw shock and confusion.
I took the hand that still held mine and rested it on my belly. His expression remained puzzled for a moment, but a light clicked on in his eyes, growing from a spark to a flame.
“Are you…are we?”
I nodded, understanding his shock. “Yes. We’re going to have a baby.”
It was my turn to be shocked when the cheering drowned out his response. I turned to the mass of people. I’d gotten so wrapped up in Gage and our little surprise that they’d all but disappeared.
Apparently, though, a baby equaled all cheers, no booing. I smiled out at them, raising my hand to blow them a kiss.
Gage pulled me into an embrace and lowered his voice. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”
“I tried to, and couldn’t get a word in.” I couldn’t help the tear that escaped and curved down over my cheekbone.
Gage brushed the lone tear away with his thumb before pulling me in for another kiss. “I couldn’t be happier.”
This man was my everything. We were going to be husband and wife. Mommy and Daddy.
I was the luckiest woman alive.
