“Why? Because you’ve had a thing for Rory since that first night we met you ladies and he got up onstage and sang. You’ve been fighting it, pretending it doesn’t exist but it’s not that hard to figure out if you just pay attention.”
“You have a warped mind.” She narrows her eyes at me. “Rory is just another guy.”
“Is that so?” I glance over to see him standing at our side with Marshall flanking him and Sutton and Brant a few feet behind.
“Yeah.” Adley turns to face him and I know this won’t end well. She’s hyped up, she’s buzzed, and she’s jealous. A terrible combination, then top it off with her need to rebel as usual and I see a detonation in the making.
“What did I do?” he asks, looking around at all of us.
“You and Sophie look awful cozy up on stage together.”
Rory’s eyes narrow when he realizes what she is insinuating. I know he knows she likes him. But Rory stopped playing games with woman when he got tied up with his son’s mom. That was a shitty night, but he ended up with Jayden so it’s a night he will never regret. I have to give it to the guy, he’s a great dad.
He’s straightforward, and when he runs into drama he is the first to set it straight.
“Adley.” He offers her a stern fatherly look that if the situation was different I think I might laugh. “I already have one kid at home, I don’t have room for any more toddler fits. I’m up to here already.” He holds his hand up near his forehead as if measuring the depth of what he already deals with. “Whenever you think you’re capable of having an adult conversation, you let me know. Until then,” he grabs his beer and turns around walking away from her. Saying nothing more, it actually appears as though he is dismissing her. That triggers a reaction from Adley that I know her well enough to expect.
She lunges forward with her fists out and I catch her mid leap, dragging her toward the front door.
Whether I wanted to be or not, it looks like I’m her Uber for the night.
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Lexi
I’ll admit it,I’ve had more fun tonight than I have in months, watching Sophie completely blow us all away with a voice no one knew she had. To think she hadn’t planned on drinking until she got a phone call from her neighbor. Apparently Ryan, her boyfriend of a little over a year, showed up on her doorstep, dropping off a box of her things. To add fuel to the fire, he had his secretary in his car and wasn’t so hush hush about kissing her once he climbed back into his BMW.
I always thought the guy was an ass. But I’ve been there before and unfortunately there are times when you have to learn the hard way.
Tequila was flowing and Sophie climbed up on stage taking the mic from Will, the lead singer in Rory’s band, demanding they play her requests.
Then she knocked us all on our asses.
She can sing. Like she can really sing.
“That was so much fun!” she hollers, thrusting her hand into the air and letting out a squeal.
“Sweetheart you are going to fall over if you don’t slow down.” Jillian grabs Sophie’s waist to keep her from face planting. Guiding her toward a table we get her to sit and she starts bouncing in her seat to the beat of the current song playing on the jukebox.
The band is done, and things are winding down, but she seems to be just getting started.
“He wasn’t even that good-looking,” she states with a laugh. “Do you know that he waxes his chest and back.”
Sutton wrinkles her nose up which makes me laugh.
“Pedicures and manicures,” she adds with an exaggerated nod. “Oh oh.” She wiggles in her stool and again we all reach out to steady her. “Eyebrows too.” Sophie snorts and Jillian giggles covering her mouth.
We all look around the table with wide eyes, because we never and I do mean never see Sophie like this. We also never hear her talk this much. “What kind of man waxes and visits beauty salons more than a woman?”
“Apparently Ryan,” I mumble and Kendall nudges me with her elbow. She is biting her lip to keep from laughing, but her nostrils are flaring and her eyes are watering.
“And the sex,” she groans, much too loudly gaining the attention of a few groups around us. “It was sooooo boooorinnngg.” Her words drag and there is no hope as we all burst out laughing.
“I am serious.” She rolls her eyes, and then she literally goes cross-eyed trying to focus on us. “I had to finish myself off. Itwas like being mounted by a robot, so stiff and I don’t mean his member.” She points toward her crotch.
I was done, as I slunk down, holding my stomach trying to catch my breath. When I rose back up and saw Finn, Marshall, and Brantley standing next to our table, I lost it again. Their eyes were wide, as they each looked at innocent little Sophie as she continued on. What made it even more funny was the motions she was making as she imitated Ryan.
“Should we take her to the hospital?” Brantley asks and it was my turn to snort. Spinning around I had to walk away and found Rory and Aaron walking toward our crowd. I grab hold of Aaron’s arm to steady myself. My ribs are on fire from laughing.
