“I’ve been sleeping in your parking lot since four thirty,” he says without hesitation.
“You have not.” I gasp as he moves around me in search of his wife.
“I found him there when I pulled up.” Bennett presses a kiss to my cheek. “So I wouldn’t put it passed him.”
“And what brings you here?” I ask but before he can answer Camryn collides with his legs and he makes an oomph sound. Bending down he picks her up and she wraps her arms around his neck.
“Hey, Cam.” He hugs her back. “Thank’s for the text.” He leans back, offers her a wink and then a fist bump. She smiles proudly at him.
I eye the two of them until they notice. “It was her.” He points to Camryn, but at the same time she points to him.
I absolutely love seeing them together.
“Seriously?”
They both shrug and I walk away shaking my head. The two of them, always conniving, I swear they share the same brain sometimes. The more time they spend with each other, the more they act like each other. I think Bennett is one of her best friends and if I’m being honest, I think she is his.
I notice a few of the girls watching him interact with Camryn and I know what they are thinking. It’s an entirely new side to Bennett. A sweet, best pals side, the kind that makes you fall a little harder.
He scoops her up, takes a plate with four rolls on it and carries her off to the living room. I watch as he climbs up on the couch, his feet kicked out and resting on the air mattress. He then pats the space next to him and Camryn climbs up to join him, gets herself settled and he places the plate in front of them, as they dig in.
Like two peas in a pod, sharing yummy goodness and laughing at the cartoons playing on the television.
That is the very moment everything clicks into place.
I love him, deep in my soul, every single cell in my body…I love him!
CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT
Bennett
“Hardwood in every room, tile in the bathrooms,” I say as I rattle off my plans to my uncle and my dad. “I did sheetrock on the interior walls to help break up so much of the wood look. Plus it adds a little brightness.”
They both nod in agreement as we all look around the space.
It’s coming together, faster than I thought it would. I was worried that with the new jobs coming in, we’d have to put my place on the back burner for a while. But all it meant was that there were a lot of late nights and long weekends.
The cabinets and countertops are going in. The bathroom fixtures will be later this week and the flooring is currently being installed.
“Have you brought up the idea of Lexi and Camryn moving in yet?” my father asks when it’s only him and I standing alone. I only shake my head, feeling the nervous energy course through me.
“You still planning on it?” I nod, still fighting the rush of fear.
“What’s the holdup?”
“The idea that she might say no,” I confess and hear his immediate chuckle.
“Boy if you live your life fearing the what-ifs, you’ll be running every day.” He places his hand on my shoulder, offering it a squeeze. “There will be hoops, you know this when it comes to Camryn. You have to go through the state, go through the same classes that Lexi had to.”
“I know.”
“Then what’s the damn holdup, if you know?” He gives me a little shake. “You aren’t having second thoughts are you?”
“Absolutely not!”
“Then get your shit lined up and get it done, son.” He walks past me leaving me staring after him. “I didn’t raise a man that runs from his fears, you face ’em.”
“Yes, sir.” I smile and watch as he climbs up in his truck and starts backing up to leave offering me a little wave out the window.
