Draggin’ ass. Tired AF. Leave me the hells alone. They were all signs Mikah wished she could hang from her neck right about now. She’d had almost no sleep and was fresh out of patience—and fucks. She had zero of those to give today.
It was her day off and all she had wanted to do was sleep, but she couldn’t go back to sleep. It just wasn’t an option. Calder and Daisy had called and invited her to the pack run.Ugh!She wanted to stomp her feet and throw a temper tantrum, but she didn’t. She knew better. If the Alpha asked for her presence, she’d damn well better pull up her big girl panties, quit bitching and get it over with.
Instead of being snuggled up like a bug in a rug in her own bed, Mikah found herself kicking pebbles across the Alpha’s driveway as they waited for the rest of the pack to gather for the run. While her wolf was happy about the prospect of going for a run with the pack, Mikah was not. Not even remotely.
“Hey, girl. It’s good to see you. I’m glad you could join us,” Daisy said as she walked over to where Mikah stood.
“It’s good to see you too,” Mikah replied.
“Lie.”
“Oh my God, would you shut up? We are so not doing this shit today.”Apparently, her wolf hadn’t gotten the memo that she was not in the mood for anyone’s shit today.
“Are you okay? You look a little—off?” Daisy asked.
Bless her heart. Mikah knew she looked like death warmed over then dragged through the mud, yet Daisy still found a way to be polite. The woman had grace and class like no one she’d ever met.
“If only you could be more like her.”
“Oh, you know what? You can kiss my—” The sound of Daisy’s gasp had Mikah stopping in her tracks. “Sorry, I was talking to my wolf—not you. I promise. She has been such a bitch today. I’d choke her if I could find a way to do it without making myself pass out.”
Her wolf laughed in her mind.“Good luck with that!”
“Ha! Don’t worry. I completely understand. This whole having another voice in my head thing is crazy. I haven’t quite mastered it yet, but yes—I definitely get it. Is your wolf a smartass too? Mine is unrelenting sometimes.”
“Oh yeah! She’s very spirited. So what gives. Why the last-minute call for a pack run today? Not that I mind—okay that’s a total lie, I’d rather be at home wrapped up in my blankets sleeping the day away.”
“I honestly have no idea. Just because he’s my mate doesn’t mean he tells me everything. Trust me, I’m not very happy about it either. I had a million and one things to get done today.”
“I’m sure you’ll survive. Besides, it’s good for the pack,” Calder said as he wrapped his arms around Daisy’s waist and kissed her neck.
Mikah loved seeing all the happy couples around Twisted Tail. It was better than the misery and bullshit that everyone had put up with under the old Alpha, Griffin, but it also made her long for her own mate. You know, the one she would never find. The one who existed only in her wildest dreams.
Maybe she should have asked Gerri to find her mate instead of tripping the fuck out.
No. She shouldn’t have.
No matter how much she wanted a true mate to be a real thing, it wasn’t in the cards for her. After what had happened between her and Shane?
Pass.
She’d rather spend the rest of her life alone than live that hellish life again. Friends tried to assure her that not all guys were like Shane. Not all of them lied and cheated or were general pains in the ass. Her brain worked, she knew that, but it didn’t make lowering her guard long enough to date someone even an option.
“Are you looking forward to the run today?”
Something about Calder looked different today? A smile on his face? Or was it a smirk? Mikah couldn’t quite tell.
“Absolutely!”
“Lie,”her wolf said.
She chose to ignore the animal, keeping her best fake smile plastered on her face.
“It’s okay if you’re not. I threw this whole thing together last minute as Daisy keeps reminding me. I thought it would keep everyone on their toes if I started to be a bit more spontaneous. I want the pack to make sure we’re prepared for any scenario.”
“What do you mean? Are you expecting some sort of trouble?” Concern flooded Mikah’s voice. All had been, for the most part, quiet at Twisted Tail since Calder had taken over as Alpha. She couldn’t imagine going back to the way life had been. Crime and drugs filled the town.
