Chapter Eighteen

The smell of majik burned Wade’s nose. If Adalyn thought he’d back off because she’d bared her teeth and showed a little strength, she’d thought wrong. She clearly had no idea who she was dealing with.

He approached her door with caution, not knowing what to expect. The tiny hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. Wisps of majik seeped out from under the door. Tiny tendrils of his mate’s power danced around the door, cautioning him to stay back. Or maybe it was his wolf warning him not to go any closer. Either way, he failed to heed the warning.

“Don’t do it,”his wolf advised.

“It’s fine. We’ve got this.”He blew his wolf’s warning off.

Wade stretched his hand out, reaching for the door handle. A sudden surge of energy sent him flying back against the wall, his jaw clenching so tight, he thought every tooth in his mouth would shatter.

“Fuck!” That was not what he’d expected.

“Asshole!”In his mind, his wolf stood, shaking off the punishing blast of majik that had just knocked them on their asses.

“What is she doing in there?” The fact that Adalyn had thought to seal her room off with majik so he couldn’t get in pissed him off. A bit more than it should.

She’d asked for time, for space. Could he listen to her and obey her request?

Nope. It wasn’t in his nature. Not when it came to his mate.

Something was off, he could hear her heart racing. He could feel the terror that filled her but had no idea where it was coming from—why she was in a state of sheer panic.

“Adalyn!” he called out.

No answer.

The thought of charging the door rushed into his mind.

“Don’t do it. You saw what happened last time and you just grabbed the handle. Imagine how bad it would be if you put all of our strength and energy into the spell protecting the door.”

This time, he agreed with his wolf. Trying to beat his way through the door wouldn’t do a damn bit of good. He’d end up on his ass again, and most likely with a concussion to boot. He couldn’t help his mate if he was incapacitated.

Adalyn’s heart rate picked up once again. How long could her heart continue on at that rate before it gave out? It wasn’t a question he wanted answered.

He needed a witch to break the spell and open the damn door. It was the only way he could get to his mate and figure out what the hell was going on.

“Erin is here.”An image of Erin and Mina sitting on the deck deep in conversation popped into his mind. Before his brain could fully process the image, his body was in motion. One foot in front of the other. Down the hall and stairs, through the sliding glass door and out onto the back deck.

Erin saw the panic on Wade’s face as he skidded to a stop. “I’m right behind you. Go!”

Without saying a word, he spun on his heel and raced back to Adalyn’s room.

“Adalyn is in trouble. She has her door blocked by a spell,” Wade explained.

“What the hell is she thinking?” Erin asked as she reached their destination. She placed her hands over the door, feeling the majik created by her cousin. “She’s strong. I’m not sure if I can break this on my own.”

Cerulean flames danced over her fingertips, reaching out to stroke the spell. “Ahh—there it is,” Erin whispered.

“Mother, stop! You’re hurting me!” Adalyn cried out in pain as the spell broke, which was keeping the door blocked and her conversation shielded.

Wade rushed to her side.

“Wait! Don’t touch her. She’s…” Erin didn’t know. She’d never seen anything like it before. The power filling the room left her with goosebumps.

Dark majik fighting with light majik for control. Back and forth, pushing and pulling on one another. Billows of white and dark emerged, surrounding Adalyn. Erin was at a loss for words, unsure of what to do. Pulling her cell phone from her pocket, she fired off a quick text to her mom, asking her what she should do.

Adalyn was paler than normal. Her chest barely rising and falling with each shallow breath. Her normally bright eyes were dull, unseeing as if she were in some sort of trance.
