Chapter Thirty

Tanner arrived at a flurry of chaos, with Rafe shouting commands to the group as Tanner made his approach. Having teleported fifty yards away, he picked up his slow, cautious pace to a quick jog. He’d learned his lesson about suddenly popping in directly where people were the hard way—and more than once. A repeated and painful mistake that wasn’t about to happen again.

An overwhelming feeling of panic rushed through Tanner’s body. Thick dark majik choked the air around him. There was more dark majik in the air than he had ever felt. Warning bells chimed in the back of his mind, telling him to run far away from the evil that seemed to be everywhere.

He sucked in a deep breath, trying to calm his thoughts and gagged on the taste of dark majik. It coated the inside of his nose and his mouth with each breath he took.

“This can’t be good,”Tanner said to his wolf.

“I don’t like it. We need to get our people the fuck out of here,” the wolf replied.

“Agreed.”

Despite having perfect eyesight, Tanner couldn’t make sense of what he saw. The group closed in around a frail looking man who was considerably tall. He could feel the sorrow each felt for the stranger.

He could see the freshly shed tears as his eyes met Rafe’s. Whoever the man was clearly had a profound effect on his pack. He couldn’t imagine who it could be. Who would bring his Alpha to tears?

“Rafe, who—” Tanner started to ask.

The frail man turned to look at Tanner.

Their eyes met.

Tanner’s legs faltered, his knees buckling under the weight of the truth that stared him in the face.

Bjorn was alive.

How was this possible?

“Gods, what’s been done to him?” The words escaped Tanner’s mouth before he could stop them.

Rafe shook his head. “He’s been spelled. We need to get him home. Can you help?” Each word Rafe spoke was coated in grief and dipped in sorrow and damn near crushed Tanner’s heart.

He closed the distance between himself and Rafe. Anything he could do to help he would—or die trying. “Grab on.”

The time for thought was gone. The only thing he could do was act. Do as his Alpha had asked. He tried to teleport the three of them back to Black Paw and failed.

He tried again.

They remained where they were, surrounded by evil.

“I’m going, too. Bjorn needs me.” Grace latched onto Tanner.

Rafe nodded to his mom. As much as he loved his dad, his mate would probably do better than he would when it came to helping his dad. She’d broken Mariska’s spell once before. If anyone could get through to him again, it would be her. It had to be her.

“We need to get out of here.” Rafe held onto Bjorn with all his might.

“It’s not working.” Tanner’s heart raced. He’d never had this problem before. All he had to do was think about where he wanted to go and that’s where he ended up. He could think about a specific place or a person and he’d teleport straightaway.

Nothing had ever blocked his ability.

“What do you mean?” Rafe asked.

“I keep trying to teleport us home, but it’s not working. It’s like something is blocking my ability.”

“Calm your thoughts. Slow your heart,” Rafe directed.

It was a chore to keep his voice calm and smooth with so much evil surrounding them.
