Yet, there were many unanswered questions. Where would they live? Would he want her to go on tour with him? Charlie was quite certain that her happiness involved more than simply being married to Kade. Her happiness would be found inbeingwith him, in every way. But would he feel the same?
“Speaking of taking care of each other,” she said, “I’m hoping that we can finally have that discussion about—”
“Absolutely,” he said. “Later, perhaps?”
Charlie exhaled a frustrated sigh. “That’s what you said last night.”
“I thought we worked through quite a few problems last night.”
“Yes, but—”
A moment later, he had her once more backed up against the house. As he tilted up her chin, his gaze glittered with sensual intent. For a moment, Charlie was tempted to give him a scold, but then she realized she wanted to kiss him as much as he apparently wanted to kiss her.
She stretched up to meet—
Angus exploded out of the French doors beside them, and Charlie almost jumped out of her shoes.
“There’s nae time for canoodling,” Angus barked. “There’s trouble afoot.”
“Good God, Angus,” Kade exclaimed. “You almost gave me a bloody heart attack. What the hell is going on?”
“Yer needed upstairs. The lassie, too.”
Charlie’s heart skipped a beat. Although Angus was highly prone to drama, his wrinkled features expressed genuine concern.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
“It’s Johnny. He’s nae good.”
Kade frowned. “Explain, Grandda.”
Angus flapped his hands to shoo them inside. “When he didna come down for breakfast, yer ma went up to check on him. Johnny didna want to wake up, and now he’s verra lethargic.”
Charlie’s stomach took a sharp dip as anxiety gripped her.
“That makes no sense,” she said as the three of them hurried to the front of the house. “Except for some pain in his shoulder last night, he seemed fine.”
Kade rested a comforting hand on her back before they started up the central staircase.
“Does he have a fever?” he asked Angus. “Is his injury inflamed?”
“I only ken what Elspeth just told me, but it doesna seem likely to me. It was a clean break.”
“Has a doctor been sent for?” Charlie asked.
“I dinna ken. I talked to Elspeth and then came straight for ye.”
When they reached the top of the stairs, she picked up her skirts and ran to her brother’s room.
Kade caught up just as she was about to yank open the door to Johnny’s room.
“Wait, love, wait,” he said, grabbing hold of her wrist.
By now, her heart was racing so fast she could barely catch her breath.
“Why? I need to get in there,” she gasped.
His gaze was warm with sympathy. “Better to catch your breath for a moment first. It won’t do to go bursting in like the room is on fire.”
