He smiled, though this smile was different from all the other ones he had given me before. “What were you thinking about to cause that horrified look on your face?”
I quickly shifted my expression back to neutral, not answering him.
The light turned green, reflecting on his tan skin.
“The light changed,” I said.
He nodded and slowly turned his attention back to the front and drove off.
I was still reeling from our conversation when I felt his hand engulf mine. I didn’t react when he brought my hand up to his lips and kissed the back of it, even as I could feel a slight tinge of electricity hitting my skin from the contact alone.
Even with everything I knew about him, there was still no way to keep myself from reacting to him.
Finally, we pulled up to my apartment, but neither of us made a move to get out of the car.
I sat there, looking out at the pedestrians. Close by, an older couple walked past our car, the woman clinging to the man, smiling at something he said to her.
I smiled a little at the sight, feeling a small pang in my chest.
I had asked Caine if he wanted to fall in love, but perhaps that was just me projecting. Perhaps it was just me wanting to fall inlove myself. And having to keep my distance from anyone who wasn’t Etta was lonely.
I had been lonely, but it didn’t feel that way now.
“It was my dad,” Reign said.
“What was that?” I asked, turning to him.
“I’m sure it was my dad who hired men to break into my apartment.”
“What? Why?”
I knew Reign didn’t get along with his dad, but to have someone break into his son’s apartment… that was just crazy.
“He was looking for something.”
“And you know what that was?”
He nodded. “I don’t keep important shit in my apartment.”
“Where do you keep it?” I asked.
He looked at me, amusement clear in his eyes. “Are you asking me to tell you all my secrets?”
I shrugged. “You can if you want. I’m good at keeping secrets.”
After all, being in a relationship with him was the biggest secret I was keeping from my family.
He seemed to be mulling something over. I hadn’t really expected him to spill to me. I was sure that keeping secrets was something he had been taught at a young age.
“He’s looking for a flash drive… in a safe deposit box,” Reign confessed, surprising me.
I turned to him with wide eyes. “Why would you just tell me that?”
Was he stupid? I could betray him. Whatever his dad wanted from him must be important enough that he would break into his own son’s apartment to get it. I was sure it would be something my dad and Caine would have wanted to get their hands on.
He shrugged like it was no big deal. “Come on, let’s go up.”
He got out of the car before I could say anything to him. My heart burned. I was fuming, and I didn’t even know why.
