Tomorrow he’d be on his way home and away from this mess. Something loosened in his chest. Home, where he belonged. He looked at the back of the driver’s head. “I’m from Pittsburgh.”

A flash of eyes. “Is it a good town?”

“The best.” There was only one thing he regretted leaving behind. For a fourth time, his phone vibrated.

Todd.Fazil closed his eyes.Fuck.

***

Todd kept his phone on his desk for the rest of the day, but there were no responses from Fazil.Don’t you do this to me. Don’t up and leave. His fingers shook as he tried to code and his gut twisted into a million knots.

He’d seen what Nathan had left in the conference room. The blaze of fury in Fazil. How his hands had been wrapped around Nathan’s throat. No, Fazil wouldn’t have killed Nathan, but he had managed to make the man shit his pants.

While it had been satisfying to see, it had been the wrong thing for Fazil to do.

Fazil couldn’t stay, but why was he heading to a hotel?

Come get the keys from me, he’d texted.

No answer.

They’d all told Sandra what they’d seen. Except Nathan had also ratted him out as Fazil’s lover, and heknewthere would be questions about that. The whole office was pin-drop quiet. The only sounds were that of the HVAC system and the clatter of fingers on keyboards.

He stared at his screen. This wasn’t happening. But it had. It was. Fazil’s text was proof enough of that. His computer dinged and there was the mail he’d been both dreading and expecting from Sandra.

Please come to my office, ASAP.

Todd exhaled and pushed back from his desk. No use in stalling.

The looks he got on the way—because everyone heard his shoes on the linoleum floor—were harrowing. Some were sympathetic, some curious, but two or three were angry. He made a note of who and shoved that into the back of his mind.

At her office, he rapped gently on the doorframe. She turned in her chair. “Come in and close the door.”

No helping the wince—it was instinctual. Todd lowered himself into her guest chair.

She took a long look at him. “Anderson has pulled Dr. Kurt off this job, and we concurred with his decision.”

He nodded.

“We also spoke to Nathan about his prank.”

“Harassment,” Todd said softly.

Her eyes narrowed. “He’s been put on probation.”

“Just like Ryan after his little incident with Eli?” Word was that Ryan was still CFO, just on an extended vacation. He bet it was even a paid one. “Do you realize what you’re doing?”

A sigh. “I’m working very hard to make sure we survive.” She eyed him. “There’s another issue.”

Here it came. “Oh?”

“Were you and Dr. Kurt involved in a relationship?”

Todd settled back into his chair. “Yes.”

She rubbed her forehead. “What the hell did you think you were doing?”

He chuckled, but it came out bitter. “Catching up with my high school boyfriend.”
