“Mikey? No…” I cut her off, but even I wasn’t convinced by my own voice. “I want to stay because I don’t want to uproot my life twice in six months.”

“I mean, that’s reasonable, but, June, this is what you’vebeen working for. From the brief two-second glance I got at your computer before you shut it, this job looks like exactly what you’ve been looking for.”

“It is.” I nodded, but my eyes met the floor.

“But?”

“But what if I can find this job somewhere closer? Somewhere here. Where I don’t have to start over?”

“It’s up to you, but this is your chance. You said it yourself, you spent the last four years planning your life around Brady.”

I narrowed my eyes. “What are you getting at?”

She let out a resigned breath. “I would just hate for you to be disappointed again, June.”

I didn’t respond, so she got up, heading to the front door.

Looking over her shoulder one last time, she said, “I’m going to the store. Text me if you need anything, okay?”

I nodded, but she was already gone, the front door shut, leaving me alone to simmer in my thoughts.

After grabbing my laptop again, I opened it, letting the job listing stare back at me once again. I could just apply for the job, and if I got it, I wouldn’t have to take it. Maybe nothing would come of it.

Besides, my resume was already done, and I’d just have to adjust my cover letter. The work was practically done. What did I have to lose?

Taking a deep breath, I hovered over the “Apply Now” button, closed my eyes, and clicked on it.

What’s that?” Juniper looked over my shoulder at my phone just as I swiped out of the messages.

“Nothing.” I slid my phone back into my pocket.

She narrowed her eyes in suspicion. “Okay…”

“Come on, we’ve gotta get on the road.” I changed the subject, opening the passenger door for her.

We were heading to Goldfinch this weekend for Gulch Days, the last condition of our fake-dating arrangement. I didn’t really understand why she needed me to come with her to this event, what she needed from me in the first place, but I also didn’t question it or think about it too deeply. She didn’t ask whyIneeded a fake girlfriend, so I didn’t ask her, either.

I thought some things were better off not knowing.

Eventually, we’d have to talk about our plans. We’d have to figure out how we wanted to end things, or if we wanted to end things at all. When Juniper and I first made the agreement, we knew this would have an expiration date, but we never really discussed what would happen when we reached that date.

Not to mention, we’d already broken nearly every single rule we’d agreed to.

An hour into the drive, the cab fell silent as though both of us were deep in thought.
