"Do you really think we can face my kingdom?" Solace asks. "King Frederik isn't going to just let Kaia go. He'll see her as stolen property, and he'll want her back. Or he'll want revenge for losing her."

"Let him try," I say, my voice hardening. "He stole Isolde from us, kept her prisoner for years, and then sent warriors to kill more of our people. He's accumulated a debt that must be paid. Justice demands it."

"But what about the people of Valoria?" Solace presses. "They're not all like the king. Most of them are just trying to survive, to live their lives. They don't deserve to suffer because their ruler is a monster."

I'm quiet for a moment, considering her words. She's right, of course. The common people of any kingdom are rarely responsible for their ruler's crimes. "We're not going to war with Valoria," I tell her firmly. "We're going to confront Frederik specifically. Demand justice for Isolde, demand an end to the attacks on our people, demand recognition of Kaia's right to choose her own mates. If he refuses, if he tries to harm any of us, then we'll defend ourselves. But we won't slaughter innocents just because they happen to live in the wrong kingdom."

"He won't go quietly," Solace warns. "Frederik doesn't back down, doesn't compromise. He believes he's entitled to whatever he wants, and consequences don't matter to him."

"Then he'll learn differently," I say simply. "One way or another, he'll learn that there are consequences for his actions. That he can't steal dragons and attack our people without eventually facing justice."

Solace is quiet for a long moment, and I can feel the tension in her body even as she tries to relax. "I'm scared," she finally admits. "Not for myself, but for Kaia. What if something goes wrong? What if he manages to hurt her or take her back? I couldn't bear that."

"Neither could I," I assure her, tightening my arms around her. "Which is why we'll be prepared. We'll bring warriors, we'll have a plan, and we won't let Frederik anywhere near Kaia unless she chooses to confront him herself. She deserves thatright, deserves to face the man who's controlled her life for so long and tell him exactly what she thinks of him."

"She'll want to," Solace says with certainty. "Kaia doesn't back down from confrontation. She'll want to face him, want to demand answers about her mother, want to tell him he has no power over her anymore."

"Then we'll support her in that," I say. "We'll stand beside her as she faces him, and we'll make sure he understands that she's under our protection now. That any attempt to harm her or take her will result in consequences he won't survive."

We're both quiet for a while after that, holding each other as we watch Alessia gently stroking Kaia's hair. Our Omega is deeply asleep now, her body finally at peace after the intensity of her heat. She looks so young like this, so vulnerable, and the protective instincts that rise in me are almost overwhelming.

"Tell me about the magical signature," Solace says eventually. "You said I can draw on your magic now. How does that actually work?"

"It's about connection," I explain, glad for the change in topic. "Right now, you can probably feel a faint awareness of me even without physical contact. Like you know where I am in relation to you, what my emotional state is roughly. That's the beginning of the bond."

Solace considers this, her brow furrowing in concentration. "I do feel something. It's hard to describe. Like a thread connecting us that I can follow if I focus on it."

"Exactly," I encourage. "That thread is the magical bond. As it strengthens over time, you'll be able to sense more. My emotions, my physical state, even my thoughts if we both allow it. And you'll be able to pull magic through that connection when you need it."

"What would that look like?" Solace asks. "Me using your magic?"

"Let's say you're in battle," I offer as an example. "You're fighting someone stronger, faster, more skilled. You're about to lose. In that moment, you can reach for our bond and pull power from me. Your strength would increase, your speed would improve, you might even manifest some dragon traits temporarily. Scales appearing on your skin for protection, increased heat tolerance, enhanced healing. Whatever you need most in that moment."

"That's incredible," Solace breathes. "I've never heard of anything like that."

"It's rare even among dragons," I admit. "The bond has to be very strong, very stable. And it requires trust. You have to trust that I'll have the power to spare, that I won't pull back or deny you when you reach for it. And I have to trust that you won't drain me dangerously, that you'll only take what you need."

"I would never hurt you," Solace says immediately. "Any of you. I'd rather die than cause you harm."

"I know," I assure her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "That's why the bond formed so easily. The magic recognizes that trust, that devotion. It knows you're safe, that you'll protect what's precious rather than exploit it."

"This is all so different from what I'm used to," Solace admits. "In Valoria, bonds are about ownership and control. Alphas own their Omegas, dictate their lives, use them for status and breeding. There's no sharing of power, no mutual support. It's all about dominance and submission in the worst ways."

"That's not a true bond," I say firmly. "That's slavery dressed up in pretty words. Real bonds, healthy bonds, are about partnership. Yes, there are power dynamics. Alphas and Omegas have different strengths, different needs. But those differences should complement each other, not create hierarchy where one person has all the power and the other has none."

"Kaia tried to explain that to me once," Solace says softly. "She said she didn't want an Alpha who would control her, she wanted someone who would choose to partner with her. I didn't really understand what she meant until now."

"Now you're living it," I point out. "You're seeing what it looks like when bonds are built on mutual respect and care rather than dominance and control. This is what Kaia was searching for, what she knew was possible even if she'd never seen it modeled."

Solace shifts in my arms, turning so she can look at my face. "Thank you," she says simply. "For accepting me, for claiming me, for treating me like I matter. I spent so long thinking I was just a tool, just a guard whose only value was in protecting Kaia. Kaia made me feel important and loved but the rest of the kingdom… You and Alessia make me feel like I'm worth something beyond that."

"You are," I tell her fiercely. "You're a warrior, yes. A protector, absolutely. But you're also intelligent, loyal, brave, and beautiful. You're worthy of love and pleasure and care, not just duty and service. And we're going to spend however long it takes making sure you believe that."

Tears gather in Solace's eyes, but she's smiling. "I'm starting to believe it," she admits. "Slowly. It's hard to undo years of conditioning, but being here with all of you, it's helping."

"Good," I say with satisfaction. "Now rest. We all need to sleep while we can. We need to be ready for what lies ahead."

Solace nods, settling back against my chest. Her breathing gradually evens out as sleep claims her, and I hold her, marveling at how right this feels. Four of us, bound together by magic and choice, creating something new and precious.
