After that response, I doubted he would. I hung up then went to check on my daughter. I should never have agreed to come here, instead, found a way to convince Utahn to cancel this trip.

Chapter Eight

Ojokun

“Hi.”

“Oh, hi.” I glanced up into the burgundy eyes of a beautiful Olorian. She had long, wavy green hair that fell to her waist and wore a tight pink, short skirt with a matching tube top. She obviously used the muscle tube a lot, with how toned her legs were, along with her firm stomach. Exactly the type who would normally catch my eye.

“Can I sit here?” She motioned to the empty space on the bench I sat on. The place I’d spent my entire afternoon after Vawn had called to cancel our date.

“Sure.” I moved out of habit, as there was already plenty of room for her to sit.

“You look familiar. Do I know you?”

It was a line I’d heard plenty of times, but I didn’t feel like playing along today. “Sorry, I don’t think so.”

“Oh.” She slumped on the bench before she perked up again. “Oh, I know. Aren’t you a space racer?”

“I think you must have me mistaken for someone else.” Maybe it was a mistake to leave my room or come to this planet at all.

“No, I’m not.” She pointed at me. “You’re Ojokun from ORIXA, right?”

“Sure, if that’s who you want me to be.”

She rested her palm on my shoulder. “Don’t be like that. I just want to show you a good time because it seems like you really need some cheering up right now. All you have to do is tell me how I can help you. Anything at all.”

“Help you.” An idea suddenly popped into my head.

She moved her hand down my shoulder to rest on my lap. “Yes, I want to put a smile on your face.”

“No.” I shoved her hand off me and stood. “I have to help him.”

She wrinkled her face. “What? I was talking about sucking your cock. Maybe a good fuck.”

I turned to face her with my hands raised. “Listen, you’re absolutely gorgeous, and any other time I would gladly accept your offer, but I’ve got someone else on my mind right now, and I need to help him.” I ran off before she had the chance to respond.

I raced toward the restaurant where I’d originally made reservations for the evening. I thought Vawn might enjoy a torch-lit dinner on the beach, along with some dancing, before heading to my hotel room. Yes, I’d stupidly planned a date, but it wasn’t meant to be. That didn’t mean I couldn’t pick up dinner and take it to his place. There’d likely be no sex, since he had to take care of his sick daughter, but I could, at least, do something to help. After all, Vawn’s daughter was also the niece of two of my teammates. I was obligated to help.

At the restaurant, I was able to cancel the reservation, and ordered food to go instead.

When I reached the beach house Vawn was staying at, I hesitated before knocking. Was his daughter really sick? Was she evenhisdaughter? Or, was it all simply an excuse to cancel our date? Though, yesterday, when I’d seen him from the beach, he could have ignored me, pretended he hadn’t seen me. He didn’t have to call out to me. I took a deep breath. Yes, this was what I was supposed to do.

I knocked then waited for someone to answer the door.

“Oh.” Vawn’s friend opened the door wearing pink-and-white-striped pajamas, his dark hair ruffled, and face covered in red blotches. Not at all the way I’d seen him yesterday. Was he sick, too? “You’re Ojokun. I thought Vawn called you to cancel.”

“He did.” I held up the containers of food. “But I thought I’d stop by with some dinner and see if I could be of any help.”

His look of confusion disappeared with a sigh, and he simply seemed sad instead. Was this where he told me Vawn didn’t want to see me?

“Hang on, I’ll get the lucky bitch.” Vawn’s friend left me standing on the stoop while he disappeared inside the house.

Lucky?I didn’t think he was lucky for having to take care of a sick child.

When Vawn arrived, he looked like he hadn’t slept in days, his eyes puffy, face pale, and hair an absolute mess. He wore pajamas, too, in a light blue. Seeing him like this didn’t make me want to turn and run, only made me more glad I came.

“I know you canceled, but—” I held up the food. “I brought dinner if you haven’t already eaten. And I thought I’d offer my help.”
