“So am I, but that still doesn’t excuse you pulling a knife on me.”

Dragging his good hand through his hair, he nods. “I know.”

“You and I, we’re gonna have some real trust issues for a while.”

“No doubt.” Seth nods.

“But Bullet trusts you. And he’s my best friend. So, that gives you some points in my book.”

“Thanks.”

“But it’s going to take some time until we’re square.”

“I get that.”

Quiet falls over the room.

“So,” I say to Seth, “no painkillers, huh?”

“I did this to myself. Now, I’ve got to feel the pain to remind myself never to do it again.”

“Knock, knock?” Dr. Boling pulls back the curtain on the room.

“All clear, doc,” Nick tells her.

“Thank you, Mr. Nicholas.”

“Please.” He smiles. “Call me Nick.”

Raising her eyebrows, she asks, “You’re Nick Nicholas?”

“Yup. My parents had some sense of humor, didn’t they?”

“I guess.”

“You can call me Squared if you like, all the guys do. Not that you’re a guy.”

I want to palm my forehead for Nick. He’s so nervous, he’s running off his mouth.

She turns to Seth. “How about you? Do you have a nickname?”

“We call him Dynamite,” Harry says.

“Does that have anything to do with your temper?”

“No.” He’s fast with his answer. “Well, maybe. But I don’t go around hurting people.”

“Only stabbing yourself in the shoulder?” She smirks.

“Yeah.” Nodding, his eyes lock on hers.

There’s definitely something going on here.

“But I have never, and would never, hurt a woman.”

“Good to know,” she replies softly, scribbling something in his chart.

“Holly?” A tall, handsome, but generic-looking man with dark hair brushed to the side and wearing a white coat pops his head in. “Excuse me, guys, and ladies. Holly, I’m grabbing Indian food. Want anything?”
