Shaking her head, she answers him, “No thanks.”
“You’re on until midnight, right?”
“Yes.”
“Okay. I’m off, I’ll see you at home later.”
She locks her eyes on Seth. “No. Not tonight.”
“Oh, okay.” Glancing at Seth again, the man disappears.
“Sorry for the interruption.”
“Your boyfriend? Husband?” Seth levels his eyes on her.
“Boyfriend once. And would like to be again.”
“I can’t blame him.”
Clearing her throat, she flips through his chart. She’s moving so quickly, I’m sure she’s not actually reading a single word.
“Well, it’s time we take off,” I say. “I’m going to make sure Seneca gets home okay.”
“Yeah, and Nick and I will be in the waiting room,” Harry adds.
“Well, uh, thanks, guys. Bye. And Seneca, thanks again for, uh, understanding.”
“Yeah. It’s okay. Just, as soon as you’re out of here, you’re going to fix my window.”
“What window?”
“Dr. Boling?” The man from across the hall pops in again.
“Excuse me one moment. I’ll be right back,” she says directly to Seth. Then, she turns to us. “It was a pleasure meeting all of you.”
With that, she disappears out of the room, and I turn to Seth.
“What do you mean, what window?”
Seneca steps closer. “The brick through my window…?”
“Brick? I wouldn’t throw a brick through your window. I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“But I saw you,” I tell him. “Behind the bushes at Seneca’s building. And then a brick came through the window.”
“That was me in the bushes, yeah. I’m sorry. But I swear on the brotherhood, I didn’t throw a brick.”
Unease sits in my gut. Was I right to be worried all along? If it wasn’t Seth, then was it Mikey and Tony? Had they followed me?
Glancing at Seneca, I see her face blanch.
Slowly, she backs away, and then in an instant, she turns and races out of the room.
