“Maybe she wants some space.”
“It’s not that simple.” Stepping around him, I make my way to my truck and yank my door open.
“What does that mean?”
“Nothing. Harry, I have to go.”
Climbing up into the cab, I try to close my door, but he grabs it, and holding it, keeps me from slamming it shut.
“Harry, you’re being a freaking child. I need to go.”
“Why?”
“Because I think Seneca needs help.”
“She seems like she can take care of herself,” he says.
“Yes. She can. I just need to go, okay?”
Damn, I don’t want to get into this with Harry. He doesn’t know about my connection to the Bordonos, and if he finds out what really happened to me that year after college, he’ll never forgive me. He thinks we have a relationship based on trust, and if he were ever to find out where I was, who I was, and the things I did, he’d never forgive me.
I’ve kept that part of me a secret for too long. If he found out now, he’d think it was a betrayal. Turning the key in the ignition while he’s still holding the door, I keep the truck in park but rev the engine.
“I need to go, Bullet.”
“Why? What was Seth doing for you?”
“Tracing her. I thought he might have the connections to do that, and I was right.”
“Why are you in such a damned hurry?”
“Fuck, Harry!” I slap my hands against the steering wheel. “Enough! I have to go.”
Without batting an eye, Harry reaches across me and grabs my bag. Before I know what’s happening, he pulls it open. His eyes widen as he stares inside.
“Damn, Avery, what is this?”
“Just things I need.”
“Fuck man, who are you?” He stares into my eyes. The question is legit.
“The same guy I always was.”
“Then what the hell do you need all that ammo for? And all that cash? Are you skipping town? Are you in trouble?”
“It’s nothing I can explain, Harry. I’ve told you.”
“Why, Avery? Who are you mixed up with? Did she drag you into something?”
“No. I’m trying to keep her out of it and safe.”
“I know everything there is to know about you, and there is no reason that you would need extra ammo and a wad of cash in your day-to-day life. For God’s sake, you were a science major in college!”
“Harry. Listen to me. I will explain everything when I can. Right now, every moment I sit here is a moment she gets farther away and closer to danger.”
“What kind of danger?”
“Harry—”
