Nick just nods. “You’d do the same for any of us.”
“And have,” Bullseye adds.
Damn. A feeling of pride swells up from deep inside me. I’m lucky to have these men for my brothers.
As Nick texts the presidents of the Black Vipers and the Blazing Rebels, the Knights step forward, grabbing weapons and ammo. I hold my breath when Colt takes a piece. As he shoves it into the back of his jeans, I motion for him to come to me.
“Colt, listen, I know you think I sucked as a big brother and still do. But if this goes bad, you could end up in jail or dead.”
His icy green eyes soften when he looks at me. “So could you.”
“But it’s different—”
He stares hard at me. “As long as you think I’m different, we’re never going to be able to move forward. They’re not your real brothers, Seth. I am.”
Nodding, I sigh. “So, then, let’s keep each other alive, okay?”
Holding out my hand, I wait for him to shake. Instead, he looks into my eyes and then walks off. Shit. We are far from okay. But there’s nothing I can do about that now.
Turning, I see Bullseye caught it all. Thankfully, Seneca walks in then, and Bullseye’s attention is pulled off of me.
“You were fast.”
Nodding, she smiles at him. “Hadn’t gotten very far when I got your text.”
Leaning up onto her tiptoes, she kisses him, and despiteeverything, the smallest smile passes across my lips.
“Colors, Knights,” Bullet announces, “and full throttle when we approach Dog territory. We want them to know we’re coming.”
Most of us are wearing our colors anyway, but those who are just joining us, like Jonesie and Seneca, slide into their jackets.
“What about me, Nick?” It’s Matt, Seneca’s kid brother.
“No way.” Seneca leaves Bullseye to stand by her brother’s side.
“Sen, come on.” Matt’s cheeks turn red.
Nick shakes his head. “She’s right. Sorry, Matt. I need someone here on defense.”
Seneca smiles in relief.
“Nick.” I can hear the agitation in Matt’s voice.
Nicks sets his mouth firm. “Sorry, kid. You got a record, and you just got out. You get nabbed—you go down for a hell of a lot longer than any of us. You want that?”
“No.”
“Didn’t think you did.”
Looking at the clock on the wall, I see it’s been over half an hour that Holly’s been with the Dogs.
“I see you, Dynamite.” Nick nods, solemnly. “It’s time to go.” Turning to the men, he says, “We all know the Dogs are unpredictable. But no matter what happens out there, we get her out alive. She has helped our brothers and our allies without judgment, and she would help any one of us.”
“Yes, Nick,” the Knights answer in unison.
“Let’s ride,” Nick repeats.
With that, the Knights hustle out the door, mount our bikes, and head for the clubhouse of the Unchained Dogs.
