“Here’s hoping.”

“Alpha Team,” Doc says. “Hit it and hit it hard.”

The sound of an explosion shatters the cool night air. It wasn’t a big one. Just enough to grab somebody’s attention.

“Glad to see Nitro learned how to dial his bombs down a bit,” Spyder says.

I flash him a grin. “I think after the compound, Doc ordered him to use half of what he wants to use from now on.”

“That’s smart.”

The sound of shouting voices—mostly in Spanish—and the chatter of automatic gunfire fills the air. The firefight is on in earnest. I reach into my bag and pull out a small device I fine-tuned and get it ready for action.

“Is that what I think it is?” Adam asks.

I nod. “Yep. Now, fingers crossed that it does what it’s supposed to do.”

“What is it?” Spyder asks.

“You’ll see.”

“Gamma Team, go,” Doc orders.

With the sound of a fierce battle engaged at the front gate, the three of us top the dune and sprint across the sand, headed for the rear of the house. We reach the wall unimpeded, and we help boost each other over quickly. When I land on the ground on the other side, I bring my weapon to bear. Nothing. No guards back here. Adam lands next to me, and a moment later, Spyder drops down.

“All clear back here,” I say.

“Sounds like your plan is working,” Adam says.

“Don’t jinx us, man. Don’t count your chickens and all that shit.”

Lowering my weapon, I pull the device out of my pocket and flip a switch. A red light starts to flash, and I have to wait for it to turn green, telling me it’s fully charged.

“So, what is it?” Spyder asks again.

“EMP,” I reply.

“EMP?”

“Electromagnetic pulse,” Adam answers. “One blast from an EMP will fry electronics. Shut everything down.”

Spyder nods and smiles. “Sometimes it’s really good having a couple of fucking geeks in the club.”

“Without us fucking geeks, you morons would still be trying to figure out why your AOL dial-up isn’t working.”

Adam laughs but Spyder looks at us like we’re idiots. Whatever. The red light stops flashing and the solid green one comes on. I look over at Adam.

“Hold onto your butt,” I say, quoting a line from Jurassic Park.

I flip the switch, and a moment later, Zavala’s house plunges into absolute darkness. I pump a fist, and Adam claps me on the back.

“Hell yeah, brother,” he says.

“Now that the house is blind, it’s time we go in.”

“Hoo-rah,” Spyder says.

We switch on our night vision goggles then break from cover and run across the rear lawn, low and swift, our weapons at the ready. We make it to the French doors on the back deck. Spyder gives us a three count and pulls it open. I’m the first one through, quickly followed by Adam, all of us crouched down with our weapons up to find the room before us empty.
