“Wrong answer,” I say as I stand and put a round in his face.
Adam and Spyder are looking at me with undisguised shock as I turn and walk through the gate, heading up the road to the rally point. This shit is never going to end and all I can think about is how I’m going to tell Fallon that it’s not over. I promised her that this would bring things to a close and it didn’t. Zavala has not only made me a savage but a liar too.
What a shit day.

Six Months Later
We stand hand in hand on a hill above the site of the new compound. Well, it’s the old site, but it’s being made new again. Purified and consecrated. Things are going to be different here. They have to be.
“What are they doing over there?” Fallon asks, pointing to the framework of a new building that’s going up.
“That’s going to be the new garage,” I say. “Most of us have some experience working on cars and bikes, so Doc is building a shop for us to work.”
“Like, a real shop?”
I nod. “He’s taking us legit. We’re getting out of some of the shady business we do—mostly the guns—and going legit,” I say with a note of pride in my voice.
Fallon turns and looks at me, her smile wide. She throws her arms around me and squeezes me tight. I cherish the feeling of her in my arms. It was something I feared I’d never feel again after Zavala slipped through our fingers for a second time down in Mexico.
“We’re keeping the weed business just because the money is too good and it is kind of legal-ish,” I say. “But Doc is putting an emphasis on taking us legit. He says he’s tired of seeing our brothers killed. Wants to do away with any business model that makes it a possibility.”
“That is unbelievable,” Fallon says. “I-I’m so proud of you.”
I shrug. “I didn’t do anything. I just cast a vote. It was pretty damn near unanimous though,” I say. “I guess most of the guys are tired of fighting.”
“That is such great news,” she says.
“I thought so too. It’s why I wanted to surprise you with it.”
“That’s about the best surprise you’ve ever given me.”
“What? What about the surprise sex in the shower this morning?”
She laughs and slaps my arm playfully. “That’s a close second. How about that?”
“Okay, fine, I suppose that’ll do.”
We turn back, and I point to where the new clubhouse is going to be put up, as well as Doc’s infirmary, where he says he’ll be doing some community service, which I know he’s excited about. Deep down, we all have a need to serve. It’s why we joined the military to begin with. Service. It’s in our blood. And I think being able to give back and serve the people of Blue Rock—in different ways than we do now—is kind of baked into our DNA.
Over the last six months, Fallon and I have grown even closer than before. She’s my heart and my world. I can’t imagine my life without her, and I really don’t know how I made it before she arrived. And that’s the other reason we’re up on this hill today. Not only so I can show her that I’m dedicating my life with the club to a new, cleaner direction, but because I want to dedicate my life to her in a new direction.
“What about the guy?” she asked. “What if he comes back?”
“Zavala?”
She nods, and I can see the ripple of worry in her eyes. “I doubt he’ll come back. He barely survived us twice as it is. But if he does, we’ll handle it,” I tell her. “But that’s not something we need to worry about right now. That’s something that may never even come to pass, so I’m not going to waste my energy worrying about it.”
She gives me a small smile. “Then I’ll try to do the same.”
I lean forward and give her a peck on the tip of her nose. “Good girl,” I say. “Now, close your eyes.”
“Close my eyes?”
I laugh. “That’s what I said.”
