¡°I¡­ I don¡¯t know what you¡¯re talking about.¡±

¡°Good,¡± he said. ¡°Better to be in the dark. Don¡¯t need some bitch snitching to the cops

about what we do.¡±

He took a drag from his cigarette. I noticed a colored tattoo on his chest poking from

his loose-fitting tank top, looking like a red and white target with an arrow sticking in the

bullseye. ¡°Point of this, Samantha, is that you need to stay away from Wrench. I¡¯ll leave it

up to your imagination to wonder what¡¯ll happen if you don¡¯t. Understand?¡±

I gulped and swallowed before nodding my head.

¡°I want to hear you say it,¡± he told me, raising his finger. ¡°Say, ¡®I¡¯ll leave Isaac alone¡¯.¡±

¡°I¡¯ll¡­ I¡¯ll¡­ leave Isaac alone.¡±

¡°Good girl,¡± he said. ¡°Nice and obedient. I hope it stays that way.¡±

He flicked his cigarette onto my dad¡¯s grass and turned his back to me, walking down

the driveway. ¡°Sweet dreams, Samantha.¡±

With tears welling in my eyes and my teeth chattering, all my limbs numb with fear, I

watched him turn down the sidewalk. I stood there for at least five minutes, trying to

soothe myself from hyperventilating, scared that if I moved, he¡¯d jump from the shadows.

In the distance, a motor that sounded like Isaac¡¯s bike revved and drove out of earshot.

Once my muscles relaxed enough to move, I scurried into my dad¡¯s grass and picked

up the cigarette butt before running inside.

Chapter Nine

Wrench

It was nearly four in the morning by the time I pulled back up to the dim Tavern to see

most of the gang¡¯s bikes already there. ¡°Fuck,¡± I said inside my truck, gripping the wheel.

A nervous sweat had been dripping down my neck as soon as I dropped Samantha off, at

being dragged back into this nightmare after such a nice dream.

All Tank did over the phone was yell at me for missing something big but didn¡¯t

explain anything. Whatever it was, I knew it must have been bad. Something was

unsettling about Tank¡¯s voice and it made me not eager to run inside. Fucking horrible
