She clamped her mouth shut and stomped outside, looking both angry and ashamed. I

turned to the cop who spoke up and said, ¡°Thank you.¡±

¡°Okay, let¡¯s get back to descriptions,¡± he said. ¡°What¡¯d they look like?¡±

Kelly started talking first, ¡°All of them looked about forty? maybe fifty?¡± she asked me,

and I nodded.

¡°Yeah, and one of them was really skinny and wore a red bandana, and I couldn't see

his hair,¡± I said, remembering the slimy one who said I needed to be followed. ¡°But the

other two had long dark hair, past their shoulders, but tied into a ponytail.¡±

The cop nodded, writing notes in his notepad. ¡°Facial hair?¡±

¡°Just the one with dark hair. They were all tall, but he was the tallest,¡± Kelly answered.

¡°Oh, and they all wore leather jackets!¡±

My heart began to race when the cop¡¯s attention suddenly perked up. ¡°Leather jackets?

Any noticeable features? Patches?¡±

¡°Umm, I saw something¡¡± I could feel sweat pool behind my neck as I watched Kelly

struggle to remember. ¡°No, sorry, I forget. Everything happened so fast¡¡±

¡°That¡¯s fine, give us a call if you remember it,¡± he said before turning to me. ¡°Did you

see any distinguishable features?¡±

Swallowing, I shook my head and lied. ¡°No, sorry. I didn¡¯t notice anything¡¡±

¡°That¡¯s fine. It¡¯s hard to notice small details during a crisis,¡± the cop said

sympathetically, and I smiled, thanking him for his understanding. ¡°All right, let¡¯s go back

to height. Six feet? Five-eleven? Any estimates?¡±

The police asked us at least thirty more questions about the crime before they took

our final statement. Throughout the clinic, other officers investigated, taking pictures and

making more of a mess in their tracks. By the time they left and we cleaned up the

disaster of tossed papers and knocked-over plants, it was nearly seven PM by the time we

all left. Aside from Kelly, who was still so distraught, we let her head home early.

¡°Are you girls going to be okay?¡± Chris asked all of us. ¡°I¡¯m so sorry I wasn¡¯t there. I¡¯ll

never leave you alone in the building again¡¡±

¡°You had a day off, Chris,¡± I said. ¡°You couldn¡¯t have predicted this¡ You¡¯re allowed

days off.¡±
