ever heard you swear before.¡±
¡°Uhh, can I just talk to Chris, please? I promise I¡¯ll fill you in soon¡¡±
¡°Did something happen with you and Travis?¡±
¡°Ellen¡¡±
¡°Didn¡¯t Lizzie and I tell you that you shouldn¡¯t follow that guy out to South Dakota of
all places? Actually, hold on¡¡± I heard her pull her mouth away from the phone to call,
¡°Hey, Lizzie! Get over here! I think something happened with Sammy and Travis!¡±
¡°Ellen, please,¡± I winced, experiencing exactly what I was fearing. ¡°This is humiliating
enough.¡±
¡°Oh, hush, it¡¯s just Lizzie and me around. You¡¯re on speakerphone, by the way.¡±
¡°Hey, Sammy!¡± Lizzie¡¯s bubbly and youthful voice buzzed over the phone. ¡°Do I gotta
kick some ass? What happened? You okay?¡±
¡°Oh god, I¡¯m on speakerphone?¡± I threw my face in my hands, ¡°For the love of God,
please just give the phone to Chris.¡±
Finally, they obliged and as expected, Chris gave me my old job back. Later that week, I
was back in my old office with Ellen and Lizzie. Ellen, the eldest of us, leaned against the
door, peering at me through her round glasses, shaking her head. ¡°I can¡¯t believe he¡¯d
cheat on you.¡±
Lizzie, in contrast, was the youngest and wildest. ¡°I told you that you should never
move to South Dakota with anyone unless they¡¯re, like, rich and famous. How horrible
was it there?¡±
I snorted, giving my first real laugh all week. ¡°Around town, people would call me the
snobby girl from the big city of Mascid.¡± I waited for Ellen and Lizzie¡¯s dumbfounded
reactions before I giggled more. ¡°Right? As if Mascid, with what? Fifty-thousand people,
is New York or something.¡±
¡°I know you¡¯re hurtin¡¯, Sammy,¡± Ellen said. ¡°But it¡¯s a blessing you¡¯re back home.¡±
¡°God, and the girls at the clinic were such biiitches,¡± I groaned, leaning back in my
leather chair. A smile crept up my face, it felt good laughing again. ¡°It is kind of nice to be
back.¡±
¡°So,¡± Lizzie said, ¡°when can I set you up with some of my hot guy friends?¡±
