piped up for him.

¡°Do you think he¡¯ll be okay?¡±

¡°I don¡¯t know¡¡± I stared at Isaac¡¯s chest, slowly rising. ¡°I think so, but¡¡±

Evelyn stopped me from stumbling any more out. ¡°You¡¯ve done more than enough,

sweetie.¡±

¡°Thank you, Samantha,¡± Tank said. ¡°What now?¡±

¡°He needs to rest, and umm¡¡± I said, ¡°he¡¯s going to need his bandages cleaned and

changed a lot. It¡¯s so close to his heart, that¡ that you need to make sure it doesn¡¯t get

infected. God, I can¡¯t believe I did that without even using sterile equipment. It¡¯s probably

going to get infected. I¡¯ll teach all of you how to follow proper wound care before I leave.

It¡¯s easy, just gross. God, I wish¡¡± I didn¡¯t realize I began rambling so much and turned to

look at them all with clueless and nervous expressions on their faces. ¡°I wish I could stay

and help.¡±

¡°Please,¡± Archer said. ¡°Please stay and help.¡±

Crow nodded. ¡°We¡ we don¡¯t know anything about being a nurse¡¡±

Surprised by how welcoming even Crow was, I turned to Tank and Evelyn. ¡°Is-is that

okay?¡±

¡°Yes. Thank you,¡± Tank said shortly but Evelyn clasped her hands together.

¡°Please, sweetie, make yourself at home. Help yourself to anything, beer, food,

whatever.¡±

¡°Boys?¡± Tank called. ¡°I¡¯m gonna need all you guys to lift him to his bed. I¡¯m gettin¡¯ old,

ya know. Shoulda done this upstairs¡¡±

After a shared effort by all the men, they managed to carry him safely to his bed.

¡°Get some sleep,¡± Tank said as he stood by the attic entrance, lingering after the rest

had clambered downstairs. ¡°It¡¯s been a long night. Er¡ªmorning. Day.¡±

Before I had a chance to reply, he disappeared down the stairs.

Buddy had been observing us patiently in the kitchen, whimpering, knowing Isaac was

injured. As soon as he was alone with Isaac and I, he came rushing to my knees, with his

tail between his legs. Curling up at my feet, his tail wagged as I scratched his ears.

¡°Don¡¯t worry, Boy,¡± I said. ¡°Everything¡¯s going to be okay.¡±
