squeaked out between my fingers.
Silence filled the line for a moment before Isaac¡¯s boomed into my ear. ¡°Wait¡ wait¡
were you? Lying in your bed, out of breath¡ Samantha.¡± He tutted. ¡°You naughty girl.¡±
¡°No! I wasn¡¯t doing¡ that or¡ anything.¡±
¡°Well, that¡¯s a shame,¡± he said, ¡°¡¯cause that was the sexiest thing I¡¯ve seen, or heard, in
a long time¡¡±
My heart thumped in my chest at his words, urging me to be honest. My skin was
tomato red all over and I contemplated hanging up the phone and pretending Isaac never
existed. But then I realized I didn¡¯t have much to lose. ¡°Fine, Isaac, you caught me. I¡¯m
mortified and I hope you¡¯re happy.¡±
¡°Don¡¯t be embarrassed,¡± he said, and it sounded genuine. ¡°If you¡¯d like, we can make it
even? You call me right as I¡¯m about to knock one out?¡±
¡°Stop it!¡± I giggled and he laughed. A real, genuine laugh.
¡°Oh, Samantha, you¡¯re fun. I can tell.¡±
¡°Me? Fun?¡± Travis never called me fun. He called me articulate and organized, but not
fun. ¡°I guess you don¡¯t know me very well¡¡±
¡°Well, this has been the funnest phone call I¡¯ve had in a long time.¡±
¡°Yeah, I can imagine¡¡± Somersaults rolled in my stomach. No man had ever spoken to
me the way he had, and I had no idea how to act, but I needed more of him.
¡°What about you? You seemed to be having a good time.¡±
I tossed my neck back and rubbed my forehead, making a weird combination of a
groan and laugh. ¡°Yes, Isaac, I was having a good time.¡±
¡°Good.¡±
Rolling my eyes with a smile I couldn¡¯t control if I wanted to, I said, ¡°So, why¡¯d you
call, anyway? Aside from, catching me¡ ugh¡ you know.¡±
¡°Well¡¡± He hesitated for a moment before continuing. ¡°I¡¯ve got the night free. Was
wondering if you¡¯d wanna come hang out with me and Buddy? He keeps asking me about
the hot veterinarian¡¡±
¡°Sounds like a real dog,¡± I said, and he laughed. Damn, where was this wit coming
from?
