streets were deserted. The traffic lights glistened on the empty road¡¯s pavement and it
looked relaxing and dreary. I liked it. Still parked, I peered around, enjoying the peace.
Then my eyes fell on the small diner with the neon sign that read ¡°Maze¡± and my
stomach dropped.
It was Samantha with another man.
Chapter Twelve
Samantha
How did I get transported back in time? Three months ago, on our last night in
Mascid, Travis and I sat in that exact diner, Maze, toasting our bottles of beer to our
future in Sturgis. Three months ago, we were happy, whimsical, and excitedly discussing
how we¡¯d arrange the home or where we¡¯d go camping.
This time, I sat across the table with my arms tightly crossed, shooting daggers at him,
as I waited for his explanation.
I could tell he was more nervous now than when he first appeared. Clearly, he didn¡¯t
get the welcome he expected, and our silent drive didn¡¯t ease his worries. When the
bubbly waitress in a candy-striped apron served our pitchers of beer and left, he cleared
his throat. ¡°Thanks for agreeing to this, Sammy. I know this is unexpected¡¡±
¡°Sure is,¡± I said and chugged a slug of beer before slamming it on the table. Travis
jerked his head back, surprised by my indelicate actions. After I wiped my mouth with the
sleeve of my sweater, another unusually crude move, I smiled and asked, ¡°How¡¯d Gina
feel about your impromptu visit?¡±
¡°Umm, well, that¡¯s the thing I wanted to talk about¡¡± He rubbed the back of his neck.
¡°We¡ we broke up.¡±
¡°Ahh, I see,¡± I said, leaning back with raised brows. ¡°So¡ she left you and now you¡¯re
coming back to me? Very nice.¡±
¡°No, it¡¯s not like that,¡± he said. ¡°Sammy, I left her. She¡¯s gone because I told her to
leave because I¡¯m still in love with you.¡±
¡°Oh.¡±
Although I still had so much bitterness and resentment toward him, that felt so good
to hear right then.
