¡°You¡¯re the love of my life, Samantha,¡± he said, reaching for my hand but I pulled away

before he touched it. A flinch at the rejection flashed on his face but he quickly recovered.

¡°I know there¡¯s no reason why you should ever believe me saying that. Or forgive me. But

I swear, I¡¯ve got my head back on.¡±

¡°You¡¯re right. Why should I forgive you?¡± I asked. ¡°Travis, even if you had some great

epiphany of love, you¡¯ve been speaking with her for three years? How am I supposed to

forget about that?¡±

¡°You ne¡ªI¡¯m not asking you to forget,¡± he said, biting his lip. ¡°Just¡­¡± he swallowed,

twitching his foot. ¡°She was horrible, Sam!¡± Dropping his forehead, he moaned as if in

crippling agony. ¡°So annoying, selfish, boring¡­¡±

I raised a brow. ¡°Really? You had eighteen hours to think and that¡¯s the line you chose

to win me back?¡±

¡°No, it¡ª¡±

¡°Waffles, anyone?¡± We were interrupted by our enthusiastic waitress who drank way

too much coffee. Both Travis and I tried rejecting the offer, but she was too overbearing.

¡°Oooh, or our world-famous flapjacks with blueberry compote and cream?¡±

¡°No food,¡± Travis said, trying to wave her off. ¡°Thanks.¡±

¡°Ah, come on! You twiggy thing could use some bacon,¡± she said, making him blush

and shrink into his seat. I didn¡¯t try to hide my satisfaction, smiling widely at his

humiliation.

Turning to the waitress, I held up two fingers. ¡°We actually just ate, thanks. But we¡¯ll

get two more beers. Each.¡±

Once the waitress accepted the order, Travis was staring at me with confusion. ¡°Two?

Each?¡±

I shrugged. ¡°It¡¯ll keep her away for a while.¡±

Travis¡¯ shoulders slumped and he shook his head, his sheepish smile dropping to a

frown. ¡°See? This is why I love you, Samantha. You think of these things.¡±

For the first time since I caught him cheating with Gina, he looked sincere. Even

earlier, he was trying so hard for everything to be the same. Him seeming so happy just

hurt me more, like my companionship was something he could discard into the trash and
