“All right, I guess I can live with that.”

“Tomorrow, then? Blowjob? What do you say?” I suggest and he grinned.

“It’s a date.”

Chapter Fifteen

Archer

The next afternoon there was a skip in my step as the sun shone down on me. I whistled a jolly tune as I skipped into the Ironhead Tavern. Everything was justbetter.Even inside the Tavern, which usually smelled of stale beer and smoke, sometimes mixed with body odor on particularly hot Arizona days. That day, though, the interior smelled of oranges and vinegar. A shine glistened over the usually dusty tables and the windows were free of the smokers’ loogies.

I turned to Evelyn who was leaned over, spraying one of the tables with the orange cleaner. “Damn, Evelyn. Spring cleaning in the summer?”

When she saw me strutting toward her, she stood up straight and rubbed her forehead with the back of her hand. “I woke up today and thought, ‘What a nice day to knock some things off the ol’ cleaning list.’ Got that energy in my bones, you know?”

“Couldn’t agree more.” I clicked my tongue and pointed my fingers at her like a gun and paused in front of her. “Hey, thanks for talking to Rose last night. Damn, that was a real game changer.”

“Oh good,” she said, looking relieved for me. “Did it help her warm up to you?”

“Whole new dynamic, just like that,” I said, snapping my fingers before I strolled toward the rest of the gang, with a merriness surrounding me.

Crow was carving a hunk of wood into a dagger when he glanced up, giving me a harsh scowl as I approached him. “Why the hell are you so happy?”

I pulled an empty wooden chair out and fell into it, joining the table with Crow, Wrench, Ripper, and Maverick. A loopy smile was printed on my face, and all the men stared at me as if I was on drugs. “What can I say?” I said. “It’s a beautiful day.”

Maverick, one of my newer road guys, piped up and said, “Looks like you just took a hooker out for breakfast.”

The smile dropped off my face. “Fuck off, Maverick, or you’re gonna be scrubbing all the mud off our tires.”

Maverick grumbled and drank his beer.

“So?” Wrench asked. “You’ve been miserable all week. What changed?”

“Everything,” I said. “Everything changed. I, uh… it’s hard to explain how or why it happened, but… well, we got it on.”

“Bullshit,” Ripper said. “She hated you.”

“Yeah, Archer, considering last we saw you, you wouldn’t shut up about how she had to leave,” Wrench said, “it’s pretty hard to believe that you fucked her.”

“Well,” I said, the joy sliding out of my eyes. “We didn’t really… fuck.”

“Then what the fuck did you do? Ripper asked.

“Uh…” as I was talking, I looked over my shoulder to ensure Evelyn was far out of sight. Something told me she wouldn’t appreciate me sharing this information with the guys. “Thing is, she’s… a virgin.”

They all went silent, looking at me once again as if I was on some sort of hallucinations. Crow was the first to speak. “If you’re trying to say you got a virgin who wanted to strangle you a day ago to jump in the sack with you, you’re a fuckin’ liar.”

“No!” I held up my palms. “We didn’t have sex. She, um… she asked me to… teach her how to, you know, fool around.”

Once again, they turned silent, but this time they seemed to be pondering.

Maverick nodded and said, “That’s pretty hot.”

Ripper pulled his lips to the side, shrugging. “Yeah, actually. It is.”

“Right?” I shouted, relieved finally someone understood.

Crow laughed. “So, what? Did she jack you off or something and now you think you’re king shit? Ha!”
