“Where were you two going?”
Enit smiled, though I wasn’t sure if it was for me or for the mouse, and looked over at the human who had somehow become a member of our weird little Pack of misfits. “We were going to raid the dessert bar and then I was going to take Frost to the greenhouse and show him all my medicinal grafts.”
Sounded dull, apart from one factor—Enit. She could tell me about the alphabet and I’d be enraptured. Looking at Frost, I caught the same fervent look in his eyes. If I wasn’t wrong, I’d say that our resident prisoner had a crush on my girlfriend.
That didn’t inspire the jealousy in me that I thought it would. Bohdie was the protection, I was the brains and Frost was the laughs. We worked well, even though no one had outwardly mentioned the fact.
“Dessert sounds reasonable. May I come?”
Frost wrapped his arm around my shoulder, but it was an infinitely more friendly gesture. “Always.”
I dressedin my finest dress, a rich gold silk that floated down my body to my knees. My hair was tamed into smooth curls and I was even wearing lip gloss. It was all armor to distract from the fact that I was incredibly nervous.
Bohdie kissed the top of my head. “I don’t know why you’re freaking out, Doc. If they’re going to turn anyone into a rug, it’ll be me.”
I frowned at the Alpha. “I don’t find that reassuring.”
Enit gave him a frown, but the smile she gave me was gentle. “You’ve known my parents for years. It’s going to be fine.” She rubbed her cheek against mine. “Besides that, you look absolutely beautiful.”
I flushed, but I wasn’t that easily distracted. “I have known your parents for years, and that’s why I’m nervous. A Convocation member, an Alpha, two ancients, two former vampire mercenaries, and Tex.”
She grinned. “What’s scary about Tex?”
I paused, huffing a breath. “Nothing. Tex is a sweet man.”
We were going to Enit’s parents’ house for dinner, where we’d tell them that she and Bohdie had done the shifter equivalent of eloping andoh by the way, Enit had managed to mate public enemy number one and was suffering from separation deterioration. That was what we were calling it. But worse than that, this was the first time I was going to be talking to her parents as one third of her Pack.
And I was freaking out.
Bohdie seemed to be sweating it a little too, despite his jokes. But not the Omega. She just threaded her fingers through both our hands and dragged us to the front door, completely calm. Pushing it open, she yelled, “We’re here,” and continued pulling us further into the house.
Carmen appeared, Bobby at her back, grinning. “Hey E.” She leaned forward and hugged her sister. She did it a lot more now; it wasn’t just our little Pack that had been affected by Enit’s disappearance. “Hey Stacey, hey Pussycat.”
Bohdie let out a rumbling snarl, but his eyes were sparkling. Bobby shook his head and pushed her toward the back door. “Come on, everyone’s out back.”
I followed them through the house to the large sliding glass doors that opened up into a generous backyard, bracketed on all sides by the woods. All of Enit’s parents were there, as well as Carmen’s mates.
Christopher sat in the corner, holding a beer and looking entirely miserable. Enit threw me a wink, and stepped up onto a chair.
“Enit!” I hissed, glaring at Bohdie when he had the audacity to laugh.
She whistled, grabbing everyone’s attention. “Everyone, I have an announcement.”
Brody, her Alpha shapeshifter dad, glared at Bohdie. “If you’ve impregnated her, I am going to feed you your testicles.” The lion Alpha laughed it off, but he looked a little green.
Enit gave her dad a disapproving look. “No, Dad, that’s not it at all.” She looked around the backyard. “Two nights ago, Bohdie and I became mates.” She tilted her head, dragging the collar of her dress to the side so everyone could see the still raw bite on her neck.
There was a rumbling growl and a blur, then Christopher tackled Bohdie onto the back lawn, snapping and snarling.
“Christopher!” Enit yelled, and then X was there, lifting Enit down off the chair.
“Congrats, Love.” He looked over his shoulder at Lucius, who just seemed kinda bored. “I got fifty on the lion.”
Lucius snorted. “There’s so much pent-up frustration in Christopher, my money is on him. I will take your bet.”
Raine strode over, glaring at them both. “You better not be betting on this fight if either of you ever want to get laid again.”
I let a snort slip, even though my eyes never left the fight. It was a lot less clean than the fights at Eden on fight night. They were close to shifting, and all the Alphas in the group were wandering over, including Bobby and Brody.
