“What a fucking asshole. These are my favorite knives,” Cara hissed, “and he just stole one.”
I laughed, because only Cara could be outraged that someone stole her dagger after she almost put it through their eye.
The buzzer sounded, informing us that it was time for our next classes, and the kids scampered off like their tails were on fire. Cara was still muttering to herself as she loaded up all the trash onto the tray and thrust it into my arms. She stormed away without another word to me.
I bussed our tray and headed off to my next class. My parents had sent me up here, because technically, I was probably Alpha-Heir to two Prides in North America. Not that I wanted to lead a Pride. Fuck no. But I guess if I was going to navigate that death trap, being equipped with knowledge was a good idea. Plus, Cara and Sammie were here, and they made the classes worth it.
I looked down at my schedule and groaned. Alpha Studies. I was so screwed. I was definitely getting in a fight, but you know what? I could use a good brawl.
I strolled down the hall, smiling politely at the people who were gawking at me. Guess being the new kid had its downsides. I counted down the rooms until I stood outside a small auditorium. Inside, there were only ten other people, but only two with any real Alpha power. Christopher, and a tall, broad guy with jet black hair and guyliner.
He looked at me and curled his lip, and I guessed we weren’t going to be besties. My nose twitched. I couldn’t really get a read on what kind of shifter he was, but he was definitely Alpha. It came off him in waves.
However when he slid his eyes to Christopher, there was absolute loathing on his face. Well. Maybe we could be friends after all.
I wandered over, standing tall under everyone’s gazes, and stopped in front of the emo kid. “Hey. I’m Bohdie.”
“Fuck off.”
“Shit, that was kind of mean of your parents. Do they call you Fuck for short?”
The guy gave me a look that would have sent any other shifter scurrying. But I was the motherfucking king of this jungle. “I’m not going away until you tell me your name. The mutt over there already knows it.”
His eyes flicked back to Christopher, who was glaring at us both with enough heat to melt the moon. “I’m King.”
I snorted a laugh. “We’ll see about that.”
The guy rolled his eyes. “Kingston. Everyone calls me King.”
I nodded, and I could feel the white hot rage coming off Christopher as we talked together in low tones. I didn’t miss the glee in King’s eyes.
“What did you do to piss off the trash can puppy?”
“Made a move on his sister.”
King whistled low. “That would do it. But I have to warn you, Carmen is more likely to bite off your dick than suck it.”
I shook my head and shuddered. “No, not her. Enit.”
King’s face shuttered, going completely impassive. “What’s your interest in Enit?” Shit, why didn’t I think other Alphas would feel the draw of an Omega? Stupid.
So I firmed my own jaw. “What’s it to you? Is she yours?”
He curled his lip. “She’s a person, not a fucking trophy. If you think because she’s an Omega that she’s yours to kick around, it’s not just that puppy over there you’re going to have a problem with.” He said it all in a slightly bored, monotone voice, but I could sense the steel behind it.
I lifted my chin. “My intentions are honorable. I just want to date her, treat her with the reverence owed to her designation.” I swallowed hard. “Plus she's so damn beautiful and there’s something about her that— I don’t know.”
He eyed me, and then nodded. “Just know, there’s a lot of shitty Alphas with some fucked up opinions who come through this school, and Enit has to deal with all of them. If I find out you are treating her with anything but respect, I will fucking smash you so fucking hard into the ground, they won’t even be able to find all the parts to send back to your Pride.”
I scented him again, but the smell still eluded me. Something rare then. If there was one law to live by in the shifter world, it was don’t fuck with shifters whose animal you can’t take in a fight. But you had to know their animal first. This guy could turn into a dragon and snack-attack me. God knew, he had the temperament of a dragon.
So I just nodded softly. “So you are interested in her?”
King snorted. “Fuck no. I would eat an Omega alive. Doesn’t mean I’ll let you be a dick though.”
“Fair enough.”
The guy hesitated. “Look. I think we get too caught up in the shifter Alpha/Omega bullshit. I’ve known Enit since we were five. She’s her own person, not just a damn Omega. So if you really want to do right by her, treat her as a person first and an Omega second.”
