Senator Kenley looked at Alexis with appreciation in his eyes, and I wanted to puke. Though, if anyone would sleep with a senator to get revenge, it would be Alexis. Her daddy issues ran deep.
The bailiff swore her in, and the other lawyer sauntered up to the witness stand like he was twenty-one and still had a chance with a girl like Alexis.
“Miss Schumaker, may I call you Alexis?”
“Sure,” she said, giving her Abercrombie & Fitch smile. Gross bitch.
“Miss Schumaker, how long have you known Hendrick Kenley?”
“We went to school together, so like, years.”
“Were you friends?”
Alexis shrugged. “I was with his friend Sampson for a little while, and we’ve been friendly for a lot of years. Hendrick also dated my friend Destinee while we were in high school.”
I snorted, but stifled the sound when Tobias gave me a dirty look. Still, the idea Hendrick dated anyone, or that I waswiththat piece of shit for anything other than sex was ridiculous.
“Did you see anything during your friendship with Hendrick Kenley that made you worried about his decision-making abilities?”
Alexis looked like she sucked a lemon. “Oh, loads of things.”
“Can you be specific, Alexis?”
“Sure. I mean there was the time they raced their cars down the freeway. They were always drunk or high—”
“Objection. Hearsay.”
“Sustained. Keep it specific, Counsel.”
“Sorry, Your Honor. Did you ever physically see Hendrick taking drugs?”
Alexis hesitated, and for a moment, I thought maybe she’d grown a conscience. “All the time.”
I was going to bury this bitch. Her eyes swung to mine, and the malice burning in them made me want to jump the table and drag her out of the room by her hair. She was fucking playing with Hendrick’s life just for revenge.
“When was the last time you saw Hendrick Kenley?”
“A couple of months ago, when he just got out of rehab, for like, the hundredth time.” She rolled her eyes. “We were at the club.”
“Did anything concerning happen?”
“Not really. It was the usual thing. He was drinking, and took my best friend Destinee to the bathrooms to fuck her.”
“Your Honor, hearsay. Unless she was in the bathrooms too, she has no way of knowing what happened in those bathrooms,” Tobias argued. “They could, in fact, just be going to the bathroom at the same time.”
The judge gave Tobias a droll look. “Sustained. Miss Schumaker, please stick to the events you saw yourself.”
Roger Waters Jr. looked pissed. “I’m sure they were merely having a tea party, Alexis,” the lawyer said sarcastically. “Did anything else notable happen?”
“I saw Hendrick’s new wife kiss Sampson Rubio. Would that be notable?”
“Your Honor, neither Mrs. Kenley nor Sampson Rubio are the subjects of this hearing,” Tobias argued again, and his cheeks were getting flushed.
Oh, she’d fucked up now. She’d pissed off Tobias.
“Sustained. I won’t warn you again, Counsel.”
The other lawyer looked frustrated with what I assumed he thought was his smoking gun. Honestly though, Alexis’s whole personality was based around the fact she was a trust fund baby. She was close to us when we wanted her to be, but none of us were ever stupid enough to get completely hammered in front of her. That was a one way trip to ‘accidental pregnancy’ and eighteen years of child support, because Alexis was a money-hungry asshole.
