“Sup,” was all that left his lips.
“Hey.”
Grim strolled off, and Wren turned to us. “You have to excuse him. He’s more of a loner than anything.” My eyes scanned the building for Solei, finding her in the corner, talking to her husband Zayden. She firmly held him by the forearm and frowned between every word that escaped her lips. He snatched away from her and briskly turned toward her. My strides picked up. I just know this nigga was about to make me return his ass to sender in here.
By the time we made it over there, Zayden stormed off in the opposite direction. His ass was lucky too or else he would’ve slipped and fell onto my fist.
“What the hell was that all ’bout?” I questioned Solei. She stroked the back of her neck with her hand and then took one of the wine glasses off a tray of a passing waitress.
“It’s nothing,” was her response.
“You sure you wanna stand here and lie to me like that? I’ll go behind his ass and find out for myself.”
“Please don’t. It’s nothing I can’t handle. Who’s this?” She turned the conversation over to Wren. “She looks familiar.” After taking a sip from her wine, she tilted her head, trying her best to figure out where she knew Wren from. Solei never forgets a face.
“This my girl, Wren. She works at the library downtown.”
“Oh, yeah, where I had my wedding at.”
“Yeah, I’m embarrassed to admit, but I thought you were getting married to him.” Wren nodded her head in my direction, and Solei burst out laughing.
“Him?... Maniac, of all people?” She waved Wren off, and her face turned beet red.
We mingled for a bit more and then finally got ready to leave. People were still drinking as if they were in the club somewhere. I was ready to go to the house and lay down. I said my farewells to the family and Wren and I headed for the door.
When we made it outside, I saw the security standing around, running their fucking mouths. That’s the exact reason how Roc was able to get his ass inside. “Hold up,” I told Wren and sauntered over to where they stood. “I see y’all don’t like to do ya fucking job.” My hand balled into a fist and I drew back, punching the first one in the jaw. The other mufucka, I hit in the stomach. He doubled over, and I gripped him by the head and kneed him in the face. “That’s for letting Roc inside. Learn to do ya fucking job,” I told them and went back over to where Wren stood.
“Did you figure out what store you wanted to get yo’ vase from?” I asked her as I opened the passenger door for her.

A COUPLE DAYS LATER
Gripping my pillow, I moaned as I snuggled closer to it. “I love when you make that sound.” I jumped at the sound of Maniac’s voice, damn near hitting the floor between my bed and bedroom window. When I’d gone to bed the night before, he wasn’t in here. In fact, he’d told me that he’d be working late and not to even expect him to come in.
“How long have you been here?” Sitting up in bed, I adjusted the sheet over my frame as if this man has never seen me naked before. Maniac knew my body better than I knew it.
“Uh…” He grabbed his phone off the nightstand next to him and looked at the screen. “Since three this morning.”
“So, you’ve been sitting there since three?”
“Yeah.”
“Why you ain’t wake me?”
“You were sleeping so peacefully, I ain’t want to bother you.”
“Okaaay.” Tossing the covers back, I climbed out of bed and went into the bathroom. Maniac was right on my heels. I sat down on the toilet and released my pee.
“You just gon’ stand there and watch me pee?”
“You ovulating. I can smell you from over here.”
“No, you can’t.” I frowned, feeling as if he was saying that I was stank or something. Now I’m gon’ have to take me a shower to feel better about myself.
“But I can. You smell good. Make me wanna eat yo’ lil ass up. Hurry up and finish peeing.”
“Can I at least take a shower?”
