“Possibly,” I admit, grabbing a blanket from the linen cupboard. “I’m sure it’ll pass, but I will let you know if anything changes, okay?”
His answer comes without hesitation, “Yes, please. I’ll keep my phone on in case.”
“She’ll be fine, G. I promise.”
“I know.” His worry is evident through his tone.
I smile before hanging up and sitting on the couch, settling in for a very quiet, on-edge night.
Chapter twenty-eight
Macie
Iwakeupwithabutt in my face.
Not a human one, thankfully, but a furry cat one.
Honestly, I’m not sure that’s much better…
“Ugh.” I roll onto my back when Freddie steps on my stomach, making himself cosy. I stare at him, curled up with his green eyes blinking at me.
“Really?” I grunt, my voice hoarse with sleep.
His purring vibrates through me.
I grab my phone off the floor and look at the time. “Crap,” I breathe out. The cafe is meant to open in fifteen minutes, and I’m still on Laynie’s couch.
Giving Freddie some quick pats and a tickle, I lift him off and walk to Laynie’s room. I knock on the door. “Are you awake?”
“Barely,” she mumbles.
I open to door to find her lying on her side, rubbing at her eyes. “Do you feel better?”
“I’ll have to. I need to make all those desserts—”
“Laynie, that can wait.”
“Uh, no, it can’t.” She’s up a second later. “It needs to be done.” I watch her disappear into the bathroom, and hear her brushing her teeth.
“All right. But the moment you feel anything, I’m sending you home.”
“Fine, Mum,” she drawls through her brushing, and I scoff.
I go back into the living room, tidy up the space and feed Freddie. Laynie comes out looking more presentable.
“Are you sure you’re all right?”
She nods, grabbing her stuff off the bench before looking at me. “I am, but I’ll need you to go get me some supplies today from Hollow Grove.”
“Sure.”
Following her out to the car, I drive us the short distance to Golden Hour and help her set everything up. After a few hours of serving customers and making coffees, Laynie is looking considerably better. Almost normal again, thankfully.
Maybe it was only food poisoning like Holden said.
When there’s a lull, she hands me a list. “Can you go get these, please?”
I take the slightly crumpled paper and read the list with a frown. “What the heck is molasses?”
