“Me too. I was suspicious for a bit, but now it’s too obvious to ignore.”
“Like a sore thumb.” Sawyer smiles proudly. “I’ve known for a while, though. But I think because I go away for weeks at a time, and when I come back, I notice the little changes that others miss.”
“Like what?”
He shrugs. “You and Reid. Laynie and Grayson. Cole pretending to hate Paisley when he likes her…"
My eyes snap to his as he chuckles, leading me out of the chicken pen. “Right!”
Sawyer scratches his head, grumbling, “Seriously, why is everyone falling in love?”
“You don’t want to?” I question as he locks up the gate.
“Nah. I like being alone. Well, I have Cayden, not in that way though…” He chuckles huskily under his breath. “But I have never thought about marriage and stuff. I think it’s more for my brothers.”
“You never know, though.”
Sawyer shakes his head, taking the basket of eggs from my hand as I slip off my boots at the back door. “I don’t see myself changing anytime soon. I like being free. I would not want to be chained down to someone, having to consider their feelings and listen to them…” I meet his amused gaze. “Did I mention how happy I am for you?” He smirks.
I smack him again. “Sometimes you are the worst.”
“Nah.” He puts his arm around me again, laughing. “You still love having me around.”
“Yeah…” I drawl, hugging him back. “I’m going to shower because I need to warm up before we leave for the festival.”
“All right. I’m going to start making breakfast. I think Mum already left to set up.”
Swiftly going upstairs, I quickly shower and change into my usual cutoff shorts and baby blue top, before adding some makeup and brushing my teeth.
My phone dings and I see Reid’s name pop up, making me smile.
Reid:What time are you leaving this morning?
Reid:I want to see you before you go.
Macie: You are such a gentleman.
I check the time on my phone before typing out another text.
Macie:Probably in half an hour.
Putting my phone down, I get to braiding my hair in the mirror when someone knocks on the door. “I’m in here!”
“I have to shower before we leave.” Grayson’s voice comes through. “So hurry up!”
Sighing, I grab my clothes off the floor and open the door to Grayson’s unamused expression. “All yours.”
“Thanks.” He looks me up and down as we pass each other. “You look nice.”
I smile. “In these old things?”
He levels me with a stare. “Take the compliment, M.”
“Thank you, G.” I close the door behind me.
Going downstairs to where Sawyer is at the stove and Holden is getting Aspen some juice, I start making my morning coffee.
Adding in a teaspoon of honey—of course—I make Reid’s as well, since I know he likes it when I do. Peering out the window for him, I can’t spot him among the greenery.
