Wiping my face, I shake my head, feeling my own headache coming on. “I think I need some sleep, too.”
“Go, honey. I will get you for dinner later.”
Nodding, I return inside, thankful to see that everyone else is busy doing their own thing and not eavesdropping.
Heading straight upstairs, I go to walk to my room when I pause out the front of Reid’s door. As much as I don’t want to bother him, I also don’t want to be alone, especially after pulling that memory out of the file I tucked away deep within my mind.
Opening the door slowly, I slip in, seeing Reid already sleeping on top of the covers. Sliding down beside him, I roll onto my side, hand tucked under my face. His arm snakes around me.
“Closer.” His voice is so low, it’s like thunder.
I move closer, feeling safer under his arm, his breath hitting the nape of my neck as I shut my eyes.
“I’m sorry for waking you,” I whisper, realising how apologetic I’ve been today as well. It’s been too long of a day that I just want to end already.
Reid inhales, fingers digging into my shirt. “Stop apologising, cowgirl.”
“I would if I could,” I tell him, my voice wobbling.
I feel him stiffen a little, his fingers loosening. “Were you crying?”
My head shakes, and I hear him sigh, turning me around to face him. Half-lidded eyes stare into my glassy ones, and I see the questioning.
“I spoke with your mum.”
His mouth purses together before he pulls me into his strong arms. Mine wrap around him, face tucked into his chest. I finally shut my eyes.
“I’m not letting you leave, Mae.”
A faint smile pulls in my lips before we both fall asleep.
Chapter thirty-seven
Macie
Itugonmylip, listening to the ringing in my ear. He answers, and relief fills my lungs.
“Hey, sis.” Axel’s voice drifts into my ear.
Sitting on my bed, knees tucked up to my chin, I give a weak smile. “Hi.” My voice is barely audible.
“You okay?” He’s silent for a moment, before adding, “Also why are you calling me at six in the morning?”
“Umm…” My eyes peer out the window beside me. “We wake up at five for ranch duties. I didn’t realise the time.”
“Well, lucky I woke up early for the gym. What’s up?”
My hand runs down my face, knowing that I need to get this off my conscious. “Axel, do you blame me for our parents leaving?”
I hear him choking on the other end.
My legs creak as I jump off the bed. “Axe!”
“I’m okay,” he wheezes, coughing some more. “Bad time to be drinking water.”
My tight chest relaxes as I tuck hair behind my ear. “Sorry, I didn’t know how else to ask.”
“It’s more the surprise of you asking that. Why would you think I thought you pushed them away?”
