“Come in.”

It creaks open slowly, and I lift my eyes to Reid’s smirking face. Glasses framing his solid blue eyes, dark hair messily styled, I can’t stop my grin from spreading.

“I don’t want to interrupt you,” he murmurs, staying in the doorway, looking too fine to be two metres away. His body fills out his navy shirt well, and his trackpants sit baggy but tight on his legs that I know are—

“I think you’re drooling,” he cuts through my thoughts.

Gaze flickering back to his amused one, I roll my eyes, shutting my laptop. “Yeah, well, I’m allowed to,” I chime back, knowing fully well that he’s done the same thing to me at some point.

He chuckles huskily.

I get to my feet and pad across the room to him. A soapy, rugged scent fills my senses, and I reach up onto my toes, kissing his sharp stubble. His hands hold onto my waist, steadying me.

“Only you’re allowed to drool over me,” he mutters.

My pulse flutters as I feel a blush splattering across my cheeks, heating them.

“So we can’t get a dog then?” I tease.

I feel a pinch on my skin, making me squeal and jump back. Reid laughs. “Do you just have all these jokes stored in that pretty mind of yours?”

“No, they just come naturally.” I wink at him before grabbing his hoodie from the desk and sliding it on. It falls down to my mid thigh, covering my shorts. Peering up, Reid’s eyes are trained on my legs, and I smile. Reaching up, I wipe the corner of his mouth and whisper, “I think you’re the drooler.”

“Come on, cowgirl.” He grabs onto my hand as I giggle.

Taking me outside onto the porch, the sun’s already setting behind the mountain range, burning the sky in purples and oranges.

I slip on my boots. “Where are you taking me?” My curiosity is getting the best of me.

“You’ll see,” is all he says in response as he slips on his own shoes.

Hand resting on my back, he gently guides me away from the main house and down the gravel path. My eyes settle on the vibrant sunset. The pastures rolling and water rippling like ribbons of gold in springs.

I suck in a lungful of crisp, country air when my eyes sweep across to the two storey house tucked away in the corner of the property. Fairy lights shimmer in the trees, and the light blue and white paint makes it stand out against the greenery. It looks just how I’d imagined it would.

“You finished the house?”

“Yeah, this afternoon,” Reid answers. “While you were busy typing away.”

My smile grows as we reach the porch and Reid unlocks the front door. The inside is bright and airy, with just enough warm notes to make it cosy. There’s a fireplace in the living room, paired with light coloured furniture, stainless steel appliances and pictures hanging on the walls of the ranch. There’s a desk in one corner, and the bookshelf is half filled with books. The bench is spotless, with three bar stools and a round dark-stained table sitting next to the floor length windows that looks out at the view.

“This is amazing,” I breathe, excited for him.

“I’m glad you like it, Mae.”

Walking around the rooms, Reid then pushes open the glass doors leading out onto the back porch. I follow him, coming to the wooden railing beside him. Leaning against it, I glance at the countryside, feeling Reid’s stare on me like a beam of warm light. Smiling, I peer up at him, his dazzling blue eyes on mine.

“You know what, I never asked if you wanted to be my girlfriend.” His words are husky and low, sending an involuntary shiver down my vertebrae.

I huff out a breath, and Reid’s eyebrows twitch. “Thank goodness. I didn’t want to have to wait another twelve years for that,” I tease lightly.

His tongue pokes the side of his mouth, his hand gripping my waist through his perfect smelling hoodie. I stare up at his amused face, admiring all of his handsome features.

“I wasn’t kidding, though. I want you to be my girlfriend, cowgirl.” His voice is smooth like butter, setting my heart on fire.

My teeth bite down on my lip, eyes moving between his. “I want to be your girlfriend, cowboy.”

Grinning widely, Reid pulls me into his arms, our faces so close I can already taste him. “Good, because I don’t think I can wait another moment to call you mine.”
