Axel just chuckles, then a door shuts, and his voice is softer. “I’ll talk with you later then, sis. I just got to class.”
“Okay, you better learn something.”
“Ah-ha, just like Naman’s Law from school?”
I chirp back, “Exactly. Naman’s Law. I remember that.”
“It’s Newman’s Law!Man, did you learn anything right at school?”
“I knew how to get your butt up early enough to walk you there, and fed you, and paid for all of our bills. I didn’t have time for Mr Newman.”
I can feel his eyes roll from here, making me snort in amusement.
“You’re right. Sorry, but now I really do have to go. Call me when you’re done, I should be home by then.”
“Great. Have fun!” I hang up quickly.
Shoving my phone into the pocket of my denim cut-off shorts, I sigh loudly.
A velvety voice comes from above.
“Mae?”
I shoot up to see Reid watching me, icy eyes wide, brows raised a little. I give him a small smile, flattening my tucked in black shirt even though it’s already tight on my skin.
“Hey.” The word comes out a little louder than I anticipated. I clear my throat. “Sorry, I was on the phone.”
The corner of his mouth quirks before straightening again. “Everything okay?”
I nod, plastering on my infamousdon’t worry about mesmile. “Yes, super. Just spoke with Axel. I’ll be getting our things after I finish here today.”
He eyes me for a moment, his irises intense and vivid. Swallowing from the sheer depth of his gaze, my heart rate picks up a little as I realisehow close we are again. The bench isn’t too wide, and his hand is on it, leaning in. Does he want to be closer to me? Does he want me to lean in, too?
“How?”
His question stumps me.
My head rears back a little. I blink quickly. “What?”
Reid clears his throat. “How will you move everything without a car?”
My teeth dig into my bottom lip, my heart sinking a little.
I forgot about that.
“Crap,” I breathe out, realising he’s right. I have nowhere to put our things, and I don’t even have a way of moving them apart from my own legs.
His lips roll inwards. “I’m going to help you.” Hand rubbing the back of his neck, like it always does when he’s bashful or nervous, I can’t help but grin up at him.
“You are?”
“Of course.”
Two simple words that come out like melted chocolate, making my body relax slightly.
“I don’t want to be a hassle.”
“By you trying to talk me out of this is hassling me.” His eyebrows rising a little, my heart fluttering.
