Smiling, I nod quickly. “It’s Monday, so I’ll be at Golden Hour.”
“Oh, okay,” his thick voice squeezes out, making my chest tighten.
My throat works before continuing, “Why are you asking?”
“Umm…” he starts, looking around for a second before focusing back on me. “Do you want to go for a ride afterwards?” I feel my eyebrows rise. “A horse ride. With me. You’re not riding me,” he chokes out quickly.
My mouth opens to speak as Reid’s eyes roll shut, turning away and muttering something under his breath. He goes to walk off when I grab onto his arm. Thick and corded, I have to keep myself from thinking about other parts of him that could be…Okay, maybe let’s not think ofthat.
“I’ll come along for a horse ride,” I answer, stepping down to his level with a soft smile. “Thank you for remembering.”
Shoulder visibly loosening, I see the gleam in his bright eyes like a summer sky. “Okay. Great. We can go when you’re back.”
“Sounds perfect,” I chime before dropping his arm.
If there wasn’t a chance of anyone else seeing us right now, I’d reach up onto my toes and kiss his cheek.
“I’ll see you soon,” I add, rushing inside before Reid sees how red my face has become.
Chapter twenty-two
Reid
You’renotridingme…
I mentally scorn myself for saying some of the most ridiculous things sometimes. I knew immediately how it sounded when it came out, and the flare in Macie’s eyes told me that she’d heard it, too.
This is why I usually keep my mouth shut, to avoid embarrassment. I can normally keep my composure around her, but sometimes, the nerves just become too much…
“Whiskey!” I shout from the gate, lead in my hands.
His ears prick up at the sound of my voice, and he happily trots over, snorting as I push open the gate. Giving him a quick pat, I then toss the lead over the ridge of his back, slip on his bridle, before leading him towards the barn.
“Are you excited to get out for a bit?”
He whinnies loudly. I chuckle, tying him up at a post before doing the same with Cinnamon.
Bringing Cole’s horse to stand beside Whiskey, Macie appears looking fresh faced and excited after her post-work shower. Copper hair flows down her shoulders loosely, with slightly blotchy cheeks and freshmascara coating her golden lashes. She simply grins, strolling up to Cinnamon and stroking her nose.
“You’re pretty, aren’t you girl?” Macie murmurs, making my chest fizzle.
Cinnamon neighs in response, and I can’t stop the laugh that escapes me. “She’s a good girl, and I’m convinced that they understand us, even if Grayson thinks I’m insane,” I mutter the last part, making Macie scoff.
“It’s not insane. Horses are smart creatures, so maybe they do know what we are saying?" She looks back at Cinnamon and adds, “Do you want a carrot, sweet girl?”
Cinnamon just stares before moving closer to nibble on her hair. I snort loudly.
Macie chuckles and gently pushes the horse away. “I said a carrot, not hair.”
“Well,” I start, looking at her with amused eyes then up at her head.
“Oh, ha-ha,” Macie deadpans, but I see the light sparking in her emerald eyes. “It’s not my fault for being born with it. Blame my mum for being a redhead.”
I scoff and lift the saddle into place on Whiskey’s back and securing the straps. “Why would I blame her for giving you the nicest hair I’ve seen?”
For once, Macie doesn’t say anything, which is weird. She always has a comeback, but not now. Right now, she’s silent, like I’ve just shocked her with a simple compliment.
Turning her back, Macie goes for Cinnamon’s saddle but struggles to grab hold of it.
