Her head shakes quickly. “No, no, of course not.” She loops her pinkie with mine. “As long as you don’t tell him that I have a crush on him.”

“Deal.” I tighten my finger before letting go and tell about our multiple kisses.

Chapter twenty-five

Reid

Isitnormaltobe this nervous when someone comes home? My heart ricochets off my ribs as soon as I hear Laynie’s tiny car coming down the gravel drive.

Hands sweating again, I rub them together anxiously as I wait. They sweat a lot around Macie, especially last night when I went into her room. I didn’t realise our proximity would calm her down so much, but after holding her during the storm, I realised that I might just be the one to calm her.

The way she curled up against me, her head resting on my chest, arm over my stomach, I honestly didn’t want to get up when I did. I could have stayed beside her forever, never letting her go. The three hours I slept felt amazing, then tiptoeing back into my room, my bed was unpleasantly cold.

Wiping my hands on my trackpants, I head downstairs to the smell of salty popcorn and more sugary snacks than one could think of on the coffee table. Aspen is eyeing them off from Holden’s hip, and I smile at how excited she is for a movie night.

“Reid, could you help me grab glasses?” Mum asks from the kitchen.

I take six in my arms when the door opens, and my body stiffens a little. It’s a reaction I've become very used to in her presence. Macie has this energy about her, confident and loving, and my body is drawn to it like a moth to a brightly burning flame.

Strolling out into the living room, my eyes settle on her like the magnet she is for my gaze, and I almost trip over the leg of the couch.

Cole snickers at me, and I just glare at him before placing all of the glasses down on the table.

“Here’s the leftover muffins.” Laynie hands Grayson a paper box.

He grins wickedly. “Perfect. I will have another one now.”

Cole snatches it from him and runs into the kitchen. Macie wanders over to the couch where I’m standing. She’s still in her denim shorts and top from this morning, her hair looking more frazzled, but her eyes seem to be simmering with delight.

“Hi, cowboy,” she murmurs before taking a pink snake from the bowl. I purposely put more pink ones than the other flavours in there for her.

I grin. “Hi, cowgirl.”

Her eyes twinkle like emerald stars before she’s beckoned away into the kitchen by Laynie.

I sigh, falling onto the couch. Holden comes to sit next to me with Aspen.

“Uncle Reid, which is your favourite?”

“My favourite lollies are snakes,” I answer with a smile.

She licks her lips, and Holden keeps her tight against his chest. “You can have some soon, but not too much. I don’t want you running around all night like a headless chicken,” he grumbles.

Aspen’s chocolate eyes widen and look at her dad in shock. Holden just looks at her, realising what he’s said. “What happens to their heads?” she asks a little warily.

Holden glances at me for help.

I clear my throat. “Well, when you want to eat—”

Holden cuts me off quickly.

“Sweets, it’s only an expression. Their heads don’t get cut off. Go ask Gran for some water before we start the movie.”

Aspen nods, sliding off his leg. The clip to the back of my head comes swiftly.

“Ow,” I grumble, staring at my brother’s glower.

“You deserve that,” he grunts out.
