I want this all night. Not the movie or to be separated.
I want her.
Fingers digging into the fabric of her jumper, I breathe heavier, my senses overtaken. Macie breaks the kiss, dropping back to her heels. I smile down at her, pressing my forehead against hers.
“I missed that,” she murmurs.
Someone clears their throat behind me.
Macie and I flinch and take a step back. Holden is behind us out the front of his room with his arms crossed, looking like the grumpy dad he is, with one eyebrow raised.
Macie pushes past me, quickly apologising to Holden before running downstairs.
I look at him with a sheepish smile and go to pass him, but he holds a hand to my chest, stopping me. “You’re lucky I caught you and not Grayson. You’ve got to be careful, man.”
Biting the inside of my cheek, I nod, feeling my skin finally cooling down. “I know, but I can’t help it.”
He adjusts his posture, puffing out his chest a little. I do the same. “As much as I like you two together, you have to tell him soon.”
“I know,” I breathe, scratching the back of my neck. How will Grayson react to Macie and I? “Please don’t say anything to him until I do.”
Holden’s eyes are still on mine, crystal blue like my own. He nods curtly. “I won’t. But I don’t like secrets.”
“I don’t either,” I admit quietly, the guilt eating at me.
He drops his hand, letting me pass before grabbing onto my shoulder and walking me towards the stairs. “Just for the record, though, I’m happy for you, big brother,” he mutters into my ear.
Macie is already on the couch beside my spot, and I feel my blood ignite once again. She’s holding the bowl of snakes in her lap as everyone else waits. My gaze travels to Laynie sitting beside Grayson, her legs lying over his lap.
I feel Grayson’s stare, and I stare back, waiting for him to snap or retaliate to this little game the girls have going on. Laynie whispers something to him, making his features soften and he plays the movie.
I don’t know what she said, but I’m finally able to settle a bit, even though my body is still tingling all over.
Macie’s shoulder rests against mine, and her thigh presses into my leg as she holds out the bowl of snakes and looks at me with a smile.
I take two and munch away, thankful that she’s beside me now. Although, now I won’t be able to watch the movie for a whole different reason.
Chapter twenty-six
Macie
Monday 12:38pm
Grayson: Are you coming home after work?
Macie: Yeah, Laynie is calling her parents tonight. They’re in Noosa.
Macie: Why?
Grayson: Because we should hang out.
Macie: We should?
Grayson: Yes. You owe me.
Macie: For what?
Grayson: Scaring the crap out of me.
