Rainbow is in fact caramel, so a promise is a promise, and with how stressed Macie has been lately, I’m hoping this will help take her mind off of things, even if it’s only for a little while.
Macie goes straight up to the younger boy behind the cabinet with an excited smile. “A scoop of rainbow, please.”
“And cookies and cream,” I mumble behind her back.
He places them on two cones, handing them over to Macie who looks my way.
“Do we dare eat these outside?”
I shrug. “I think if we are in shade it’ll be all right.”
Walking over to the park, we find a wooden bench beneath a tree where the sun isn’t scorching our skin. It’s still hot but bearable, and the ice cream will help cool us down a little.
Macie lets me have a bite of her scoop first, and I hum in agreement. The buttery, golden taste floods my mouth and cools me down instantly. “That is good. I can taste the caramel.”
“See.” She slaps my thigh playfully, making me chuckle. “Can I try yours?”
She licks a bit and smiles. “Not as good as caramel.”
“Whatever…” I murmur with a smirk.
Macie giggles, licking her cone once more before blinking her shimmering green eyes at me. “You remember our little bet?”
“Of course I did.”
Macie sinks back against the seat, her cheeks rosy and warm as she licks her melting ice cream.
I look down at her folded legs, wanting to feel how smooth her skin. She interrupts our silence.
“Do you remember everything I tell you?” she asks curiously without looking at me.
“Yeah,” I answer genuinely.
That makes her gaze collide with mine, the nerves prickling at my flesh once again at how close she is.
“Why?”
My shoulders shrug. “Because I liked you when I met you, and I wanted to do whatever I could to make you smile, so I remembered everything you liked and don’t like, such as storms and tight shoes,” I admit quietly, my heart rate picking up.
Staring down at Macie, her lips are slightly parted. I just smile gently at her surprised face. It’s no longer a secret between us that I’ve liked her for a long time, so I don’t know why she’s surprised that I know everything about her.
My eyes flick down to her hand, seeing her ice cream starting to melt. I grab it, licking the brim of her cone, caramel coating my tongue. “It’s dripping on you.”
Macie keeps looking at me, eyes wide and unblinking as she mumbles, “I don’t care.”
Lifting her chin to kiss me with her sweet, sugary lips, I groan against her, my free hand cupping the back of her neck as she leans into me. I’m becoming addicted to her. To her words, her kisses and her touch. I don’t think I'll ever be able to breathe properly without her near me, like the magnet she’s always been, drawing me closer.
Our lips move together as ice cream drips down my fingers and wrist, but I ignore it. I just want her right now and forever.
Moving backwards, I wipe my hand clean with a napkin before attacking more of my melted ice cream.
Macie’s cone drips just as much, and she giggles as she twists it around, catching each droplet before it lands on her exposed legs.
“Can I ask you something?” I question, staring off at the green park full of singing birds and country air.
“You just did,” she teases.
My grin reappears before dropping, and I clear my throat. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, but why were you so upset when I helped you get petrol?”
