“It’s a nice morning, isn’t it,” he says, stealing my attention from the others.
I pull a face. “It’s cold.”
“It’ll warm up, though,” he counters, trying to sound upbeat. He’s always had that personality since I’ve known him.
We start walking over to the pen together, his tattooed arm draped over me casually like a thick scarf. I know people see him as a star athlete, and it’s true, he’s one of the best in the league. But to me he’s still the little kid I used to splash in the creek and go dirt bike riding with on our summer breaks. The thought makes me smile at how Sawyer has this whole city boy persona, but deep down, he’s still a country boy like the rest of us.
“Are you helping me out this morning?”
“I guess. I don’t really know what to do when I come back, but this is usually the easiest task.” He smirks down at me.
I snort loudly. “Well, I’m glad you're back before your season starts, otherwise I won’t see you for a while.”
Opening the gate, he slips in behind me, and the birds start going wild.Hungry little beasts.
“I knew you missed me whenever I’m away,” Sawyer chimes, a little too proudly.
“Your brothers do more,” I quip back, and he feigns a gasp. I smack his arm gently before asking, “How is it in the city? I’ll have to come visit you with Grayson. Then we could come see you play a game. It’s been a while since we have in person.”
He dips his chin in agreement. “You should, but you’d have to take the couch. It’s only two bedrooms and Cayden takes the other one.”
I pout up at him. “I feel like as the girl I should get your bed and you should take the couch.”
Sawyer barks a laugh, shaking his head. “No chance. I know you too well to bethataccommodating,Macie Moo.”
“Rude,” I mutter, but a smile toys with my face.
“I’m accommodating to the girls I want to get to know.” I don’t miss his wink.
I pull another face. “You’re terrible.”
“No, actually. At least that’s not what they have said.”
“Ew!” I push him away. “I don’t want to know about that stuff.”
He cracks up laughing, taking a handful of chicken feed and sprinkling it on the ground. “I’m just being honest.”
“I’d rather you not be,” I grumble.
Sawyer snickers.
I refill their water and collect the eggs from the hatch. I see Sawyer staring at Grayson and Reid walking together. “Speaking of honesty, when are you two coming clean?”
I blink at him in surprise. “W—what?”
“You know…” He pumps his tawny brows at me before dropping his voice to whisper. “You and Reid.”
“Yes, I’m aware of me and Reid, but how do you know about me and Reid?” I hiss, a hand resting on my popped hip.
He scoffs lightly. “I’m good at picking up these things… plus Cole told me when you disappeared last night.”
My eyes roll. “Cole is telling everyone.”
“We can all see it too, except for Grayson, but he’s really quite oblivious to anyone apart from Laynie,” Sawyer adds, making my frown drop.
I blink at him, and he stares back. I push him gently in the chest. “You figured that out too?”
“Yeah, it’s been obvious for a while, but man, I’m glad someone else knows now.”
