I bite down on my lip sharply. “There’s nothing to tell, Gray. He was just doing something nice for me.” I feel the ash on my tongue and the burning of my throat as I lie right to his face.
Grayson lets out a sigh, the corner of his mouth lifting. “All right. Forget I said anything then.”
I’m left staring at the empty doorway when he leave the room, and my insides twist uncomfortably. It's become increasingly harder being between them since I moved in.
Why did I have to fall in love with his brother?
“Can you get me some water, please?” I ask Laynie as she stands from our regular booth in Ashwood Afterhours.
She nods, looking to Grayson beside her as I lean back in the brown leather seat.
Dressed in a simple white flowy dress and my favourite cowboy boots, I’m feeling very comfortable here tonight—unlike Delly beside me. With her arms crossed tightly across her stomach, eyes wide, and barely saying anything, I’m trying to figure out if she’s just uncomfortable, or if she’s always this shy.
As expected, Cole tried chatting her up the moment she and Laynie strolled up to our booth at the back of the crowded pub. She didn’t take to his pick up lines. To be fair, they were abysmal. Has the phrase,“You’re an angel because you fell from heaven,”ever worked on a girl? I’m yet to hear someone’s success story from thatbrain teaser.
On my other side is Sawyer, leaning with his arm casually on the top of the booth, smelling of expensive cologne and shampoo. I wonder if he has someone back in Sydney, because usually he’s all over girls when he’s here, but tonight, he doesn’t seem interested.
“Last weekend, the team went to a new club after a group dinner,” he starts, leaning his tattooed elbows on the wooden table. Holden and Reid listen over the upbeat music.
They must miss having him around, because Reid has barely looked at me since we arrived. He did give me a once over in the living room when I’d changed after dinner, and I could see the whisper of a smirk on his mouth. Now he’s just focused on his brother, which is understandable.
I think he misses Sawyer when he’s away, even though he’d never tell his brothers that.
“The girls there werestunning. Wound up kissing six of them.”
Yeah, okay, nevermind. Sawyer is still a ladies man…
“In one night?” Holden asks, looking repulsed.
I have to refrain from laughing at him.
“Yeah, man. I think, in like, three hours.” Sawyer flashes them his famous wide grin that the news cameras love seeing.
I clear my throat, forcing Sawyer to look my way. I smile kindly. “As much as I’m loving the whole player situation, we have a guest with us.” I tilt my head towards Delly.
Sawyer stares at me before leaning over, grinning at Delly before saying, “Hi, I’m Sawyer. How many guys have you kissed in a night?” I hit his arm, and Sawyer glares down at me. “Don’t bruise me.”
“Will Coach not go easy on you if you do?” I feign a pout, pretending to be apologetic.
I hear Reid snort a laugh, making me glance his way and grin.
Sawyer groans, before pulling me into him, engulfing me in his mass of muscles. “I missed you too, Macie.”
I let out a giggle before meeting Reid’s intense eyes again. A flicker of something burns in them.
Is he jealous?
My smile falters as Cole, Laynie and Grayson return with all of our drinks, squishing into the booth. I have to shove my arms underneath the table to fit between Sawyer and Delly, and to say it is uncomfortable is an understatement. Cole and Grayson fight over the last spot when Cole stumbles into the adjoining table, and Grayson slides in beside a laughing Laynie.
“Fine. I’ll grab a chair then,” Cole groans.
“Here, take my seat. I’m the guest, afterall.” Delly’s voice is so quiet I barely hear it.
Cole’s eyebrows rise before he smirks devilishly. “How about you sit on my lap?”
“How about you just find a damn seat and shut up,” Holden growls from the other end of the booth.
Cole does just that, and honestly, I don’t blame him. Holden sometimes scares me as well with his authoritative voice, even though I know he wouldn’t hurt a fly. Seriously, sometimes I think Holden should have been the oldest with how grumpy he is. But then again, Reid fills that roll really well, being so calm, neat and responsible.
