Reid leans his waist against the timber bar top, arms crossing in front of him as he studies me intently.

My eyes don’t budge from his until he asks, “Why do you only get water?”

My cheeks flush pink again, heart hammering away as I simply answer, “I like water.”

His gaze shutters. “Is it because it’s free?”

Eyes flaring, my mouth opens, but Paisley returns with our glasses, cutting me off. “Eight dollars,” she chimes, pushing a button on the register.

Before I can say anything, Reid stops her. “Can you get Mae a coke?”

Nodding, Paisley disappears again.

I glare up at him. “What are you doing?” I half gasp, breathless.

“I’m getting you a drink that’s actually a drink,” Reid responds roughly.

My jaw tenses as my spine shivers from the deepness of his tone. Tongue swiping at my teeth irritably, I blink away, breaking the tension between us. I know it’s only a measly little drink, but it’s still something he’s paying for.

Maybe I can just pay the four dollars before he can?

Guilt settles in my stomach, making it churn. Paisley pops the extra glass down in front of me, and I just stare at it. “That’s four dollars.”

Reaching for my wallet, Reid hands her money before sliding the soft drink closer to me, even putting a straw in it, because I like using straws.

“You didn’t need to do that,” I murmur, unsure of what to say.

Reid frowns down, taking his beer. “I didn’t need to, but Iwantedto, cowgirl.”

He wanted to.

Swallowing, I take it off the bench and smile up at him. “Thank you.” If his brother’s weren’t here, I’d reach up and kiss his cheek, but I’ll have to let that dream die, much like the rest of them.

Reid

Themusicisalwaysso loud in here.

I mentally groan as I lean on the table as Sawyer goes on about a brand deal for an athletic leisure brand. It sounds cool, but I have had enough for one night at the pub. The only reason I’m still here is because Macie is out there dancing with Delly and Laynie, and I’m watching over her.

I’ve seen two guys already try and approach her, and each time, my toes curl as I get ready to interrupt. Luckily, she gives them zero attention, which is a relief.

“How’s it living with Cayden?” Grayson asks beside me.

“He’s fine. A little messy.”

“So are you,” Holden grumbles.

I sniff a laugh because he’s not wrong.

“He’s a good roommate and teammate. He likes reading comic books though.”

“Oh boring,” Cole adds.

Grayson chuckles, elbowing me. “You two would get along then.”

I roll my eyes, grabbing a potato wedge off the plate.
