Chapter twenty-seven

Macie

“You’remakingallofthose for the weekend?” Delly asks, looking at the recipes sprawled out on the bench at Golden Hour.

Laynie nods giddily, adding another one to the pile. “I have a lot of new things to try this year. People come just to try my new treats each season, and it’s good for the cafe.”

“That’s so nice,” Delly adds, looking at a picture of apple cashew pies. “I can’t wait to try these ones.”

“I’ll be making those tomorrow,” Laynie says, looking my way as I finish cleaning the coffee machine. “Can you lock up the front for me? Then we can go back to mine. I’m thinking of having a pasta night.” She pumps her blonde brows at me.

I nod enthusiastically, taking the keys off the hook on the wall and locking up the glass doors. Grabbing my bag off the bench, I follow them through the kitchen, locking the back door as well before handing my friend her keys.

“All right, kids, get in.”

I laugh at Laynie, hoping into the front seat, with Delly in the back. Hser house is only a few streets away, so the drive is very short. We don’t even have time for the air-conditioner to kick in before we’re parked in the driveway. Jumping out, I take my things in and settle down on the couch with Delly while Laynie goes to get changed.

“Should we play a game tonight?” I suggest, looking at the stand of board games Laynie’s been collecting since she was a kid. “Maybe Monopoly?”

“That game starts wars,” Delly mutters, and I laugh at her.

“Do you have a competitive family?”

She nods. “Definitely. My older brother is the worst, and the biggest cheat. I’ve caught him so many times looting from the bank.”

Snickering in agreement, I think back to all the summer holidays of Axel and I playing with Laynie and the Lawsons. It was eight of us playing at once. You could call it chaotic, but I’d call it wildly entertainin. And Cole cheated most of the time, no surprise there...

“How about a card game then?”

Delly goes over, picking out a few when Laynie returns, unpacking a few things in the kitchen.

“Hey, L, do you want to play some games tonight? We haven’t in ages.”

“Yeah, sure,” she chirps, grabbing a glass of water and sculling it. “Do you girls want anything before I start making dinner?”

“Do you have any juice?”

Laynie points to the fridge, and I get up, pouring Delly and I a glass each. “Should we ask G if he wants to come over?”
