Dried and dressed, he left the bathroom to find Lys hadn't moved. She was probably sleeping off her drunken night. He hadn't been counting how many drinks she'd consumed last night but he estimated it had been a lot more than he'd seen her have before. No doubt the amount of alcohol in her system was the only reason he'd gotten her to Vegas and to the altar without too much difficulty.
Now he just hoped she didn't freak out and demand an annulment when she woke. Their marriage was one thing that happened in Vegas he didn't want to stay in Vegas.
Making his way back to the living room he could hear more than two voices and smiled. It wasn't often he got to see his friends. He missed them. Not enough to move back here but enough he knew he would make more of an effort to visit. Or get them to come to Sunnyville.
"Hey."
"Please, please, please, please, please let me be the one to tell the barracuda," Maryn begged.
"No." He shook his head. "It stays under wraps for now."
"It's going to come out as soon as we file the paperwork," she argued.
"I need you to make sure it doesn't."
"But—"
"Maryn. Not a whisper about it until Penny's permanent guardianship is granted." He turned to Keaton. "Which is where you come in. I want you on that. Get in touch with Alyssa's lawyer and fast track this thing. It's been denied once. I want to know why."
"Done," his friend assured, tapping away at his phone.
"Add my name to the petition if you have to."
"That will definitely get out," Maryn added.
"I know. Last resort on that because I don't want to deal with Emmaline until we've got Penny secure."
"Who's Emmaline? Is she the barracuda?" Penny asked.
Maryn grinned. "Oh, yeah, she's a barracuda."
"She's my stepmother," Jack explained.
"Oh. She's a rich Gina?" Penny's gaze darted between the four of them.
"Yes. Where's Dash?" Jack asked Roark.
"On his way. He's bringing some equipment."
Penny pouted. "Equipment Roark said I can't play with."
"Kid, you just took apart your phone!"
"You need it open to bug it, right?"
"Jesus." Roark shook his head and went back to fiddling with the electronics spread out on the dining table.
Penny grinned and took the seat next to him.
"Don't touch anything!"
"Aw, c'mon." She slumped in her chair and crossed her arms.
"Did you finish your burger?" Jack looked around for empty plates.
"It's not here yet."
He glanced at his watch. "Really?"
